What Your Job Will Be Like
We are seeking a Summer Associate Degree Student Intern that specializes in Mechanical Design/Engineering to join our team!
ResponsibilitiesOn any given day, you may be called on to:
- Create & modify mechanical models & drawings using CAD software, while incorporating GD&T-based tolerancing schemes to describe the engineering intent of the parts/assemblies.
- Learn appropriate part-defining definition methods.
- Increase understanding of product definition requirements.
- Update models and drawings per engineering change orders.
- Other projects as assigned by a staff mentor.
Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite.
Salary RangeAt Sandia, we value the important work done by our interns and its contribution to National Security. Because of this, our interns earn competitive pay rates. Our pay structure is based on earned credit hours, classification, and degree level. Your pay rate will be determined during the hire process and included in your offer package. QualificationsWe Require
- Currently attending and enrolled full time in the spring term immediately preceding the internship (or scheduled to graduate in the spring) in an accredited undergraduate program.
- Pursuing a science, engineering, or math major.
- Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0/4.0.
- Ability to work up to 40 hours per week during the summer.
- U.S. citizens, legal permanent residents, asylees or refugees in the U.S.
Note:
If you have not earned a HS diploma or equivalent, please apply to a high school intern position.
- Pursuing an AS or AAS in Drafting, Mechanical Engineering Technology, or a related field.
- Experience using solid modeling application software.
- Experience with mechanical design.
- Excellent organizational skills.
- Excellent interpersonal skills.
- Proven record of demonstrating initiative and achieving results.
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Products.

About Our TeamSandia's "Design Engineering Group" consists of multiple mechanical design departments that provide design engineering services using Computer Aided Design (CAD) software such as PTC Creo and other 3D modeling tools. We partner with engineering teams across the lab to produce innovative design solutions based on high quality CAD models and drawings. We ensure fit, form, and function using Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T), while ensuring manufacturability and maintainability of designs.
We determine the physical characteristics of the product including geometric form, interface features, manufacturing specifications, processes, and assembly instructions. We communicate design options and recommended approaches to product development teams, stakeholders, and manufacturing partners. We apply technical judgment based upon engineering principles in the design and development of innovative products in support of our Nation's security programs.
