What Your Job Will Be Like
The Microsystems Assembly, Soldering, and Brazing team is seeking support from an R&D Undergraduate Year‑Round Intern! The intern should be majoring in mechanical, materials, electrical, or a related engineering discipline. This individual should be able to work on‑site in Albuquerque, NM, as their school schedule allows. They should have laboratory experience, be able to use word processors, spreadsheets, and presentation software, and be capable of using and/or learning design and scientific software (e.g., Solid Works, AutoCAD, etc.).
Knowledge of microsystems and electrical circuits is a plus.
- Image components with various microscopes.
- Assist in preparing various documentation (Operating Procedures, Safety documentation, etc.).
- Interact with members of the team to develop process parameters and conduct experiments.
- Evaluate, assess, and handle data, and create and modify graphic representations of data.
- Participate in team meetings and projects.
- Lab organization and cleaning
Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite.
Salary RangeAt Sandia, we value the important work done by our interns and its contribution to National Security. Because of this, our interns earn competitive pay rates. Our pay structure is based on earned credit hours, classification, and degree level. Your pay rate will be determined during the hire process and included in your offer package. QualificationsWe Require
You bring the confidence and skills to be eligible for the job by meeting these minimum requirements:
- Currently attending and enrolled full time in an accredited undergraduate program
- Pursuing a science, engineering, or math major
- Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0/4.0
- Ability to work up to 25 hours per week during the academic year, and up to 40 hours per week during the summer
- Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship
Note:
If you have not earned a HS diploma or equivalent, please apply to a high school intern position.
- Enrolled in a Materials Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Electrical Engineering degree program.
- Completion of Basic Mathematics & Science courses, Engineering Undergraduate Laboratories, Basic Physics, Basic Chemistry, and Introduction to Engineering courses.
- Familiarity with microscopy techniques and imaging.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q Clearance.

About Our TeamThe Microsystems Assembly & Brazing Department specializes in: (1) advanced packaging of electrical, MEMS‑based, and optical components, and (2) addressing near‑term and long‑term soldering R&D needs, and (3) developing brazing methodologies for mission applications. The packaging team develops prototypes, fixtures, and proof‑of‑concept devices to meet a wide variety of national security mission needs. We have advanced packaging and assembly capabilities that include precision wire bonding of integrated circuits, laser machining, and hermetic sealing, which are used to prototype complex integrated electronics assemblies.
The soldering and brazing teams focus on understanding the process‑to‑performance connection of these joining methodologies, leading research to anticipate future needs while addressing engineering challenges affecting the mission today.
