The Advanced Metals Processing team is dedicated to tackling ambitious material challenges across our operations, where we focus on developing cutting-edge advanced manufacturing processes. Our team of subject matter experts specializes in the advanced manufacturing and modification of metals, managing a diverse portfolio of R&D projects that push the boundaries of the state-of-the-art while supporting a wide range of customers across Sandia and the Nuclear Security Enterprise.
We are excited to announce an opportunity for an energetic R&D Undergraduate Intern to join our Advanced Metals Processing team. Join us in our mission to innovate and advance the field of metal additive manufacturing!
On any given day, you may be called on to:
* Assist with process development
* Work with technologies such as laser powder bed fusion, directed energy deposition (both powder and wire), wire arc, and bound powder extrusion.
* Collaborate with team members to analyze experimental data and contribute to project reports.
* Participate in brainstorming sessions to develop innovative solutions for material processing challenges.

Salary Range
At Sandia, we value the important work done by our interns and its contribution to National Security. Because of this, our interns earn competitive pay rates. Our pay structure is based on earned credit hours, classification, and degree level. Your pay rate will be determined during the hire process and included in your offer package. Qualifications We Require
You bring the confidence and skills to be eligible for the job by meeting these minimum requirements:
* Currently attending and enrolled full time in an accredited undergraduate program
* Pursuing a science, engineering, or math major
* Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0/4.0
* Ability to work up to 25 hours per week during the academic year, and up to 40 hours per week during the summer
* Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship

If you have not earned a HS diploma or equivalent, please apply to a high school intern position.
Qualifications We Desire
* Forward-thinking and enthusiastic student, preferably a sophomore or junior majoring in materials science or engineering, metallurgical engineering, mechanical engineering, civil engineering, electrical engineering or a related degree.
* Completion of Basic Science and Engineering Undergraduate Laboratories, Basic Physics, Basic Chemistry, and Introduction to Engineering Courses.
* Enrollment in or completion of Heat/Mass Transfer, Basic Materials, and Design Courses
* Ability to use design software such as Solidworks, ProE, or others
* Knowledge of Labview, G-code, Optics, Lasers, or Welding
* Experience with mechanical testing of metals
* Experience with Additive Manufacturing
* The ideal candidate should have: laboratory experience, a solid understanding of Heat and Mass Transfer, and knowledge of the Mechanical Behavior of Materials.
* Proficiency in word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation software is essential, along with the ability to use design software such as Solid Works.

About Our Team
The Advanced Metal Processing Department and Rapid Development Machine Shop provides scientific and engineering expertise in the areas of advanced manufacturing, metal additive manufacturing and laser machining/surface modification. Advanced manufacturing includes the design and fabrication of components by conventional subtractive machining, additive manufacturing, electrical discharge machining (EDM), laser machining, laser etching/annealing, vacuum induction melting, and optical probe measurements. Metal additive manufacturing expertise includes alloy development, qualification/acceptance, and design.
Current technologies utilized include laser powder bed, metal fused deposition (FDM), and powder and wire directed energy deposition (DED). Our staff supports a variety of programs and is highly engaged in providing collaborative, innovative materials science and systems-based engineering solutions. The analytic capabilities available:
High Speed Microscopy, High Speed Thermal Imaging, Thermal Desorption, Thermal Diffusivity, Particle Size Analysis, Avalanche Angle Measurement, Thermal Imaging, plus others.
