Distribution Protection Engineering Manager
PNM is looking for a Distribution System Protection Engineering Manager responsible for leading PNM's distribution protection department, performing complex engineering activities that require the application of engineering knowledge in a safe, effective, and economic manner.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES- Perform short circuit, overcurrent, and distance coordination studies using ASPEN Oneliner and/or Synergi.
- Calculate and develop protective relay settings for new projects and modify existing settings as required to maintain reliability and coordinate with neighboring entities.
- Analyze system disturbances and recommend mitigation plans.
- Act as an SME on NERC and/or CIP compliance standards for distribution protection roles.
- Review relaying schematics, wiring diagrams and protection design deliverables for accuracy.
- Support regulatory filings and PNM plans and programs.
- Ensure compliance with IEEE, NESC, FERC/NERC, and other applicable standards.
- Provide technical support, direction and training to field personnel and contractors.
- Communicate engineering ideas, recommendations, and evaluations to internal and external audiences.
- Apply engineering expertise to improve or develop new standards and technologies.
- Perform all work in a safe and timely manner.

- Experience with short‑circuit study software (ASPEN Oneliner, CAPE, Synergi, Cyme) and utilities software (Power Base, acSELerator).
- Knowledge of modern transmission, distribution, and substation technologies.
- Ability to read, interpret, and apply national, state, and local codes and standards (IEEE, ANSI, NEC, NESC, ACI, AISC, ASME, NACE).
- Ability to translate electrical theory to utility applications for reliability improvement.
- Decision making following company protocols.
- Comfortable working around high‑voltage facilities (up to 345 kV).
- Teamwork with various departments and personnel levels.
Salary Grade: G04 – Minimum $104,766, Midpoint $141,434, Maximum $178,102.
SUMMARYDirects and manages a team involved in the design and construction of transmission, distribution, operation, and maintenance activities; manages, trains, and directs engineers and technical personnel; provides administrative support to management; and ensures execution of goals and projects within the engineering functional unit.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (Additional)- Plan, coordinate, supervise, and direct engineers and technical staff.
- Administer contracts for a wide array of projects, services, materials, and equipment.
- Hold employees accountable for timely project completion and promote a safe working environment.
- Oversee departmental budget and capital project development, including 20‑year planning.
- Review and approve design and work product to ensure compliance with applicable codes and standards.
- Handle employee matters such as performance appraisals, training, and counseling.
- Recommend necessary changes in engineering and construction standards.
- Develop long‑range distribution, sub‑transmission, transmission, and generation planning.
- Approve designs for new construction, system reliability, and maintenance.
- Input into job scheduling and engineering criteria for service to customers.
- Represent the Company as expert witness in regulatory proceedings.
- Ensure proper execution of training, performance appraisals, counseling, discipline, and EEO compliance.
- Support revenue growth by engaging economic development organizations to attract business.
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering and at least 7‑9 years of related experience.
- Master’s degree preferred.
- Current driver’s license with a satisfactory driving record.
- Licensed Professional Engineer (active and in good standing).
- Preference for New Mexico or Texas license.
- Communication: reading, writing, and presenting complex information.
- Mathematical: probability, statistics, geometry, and trigonometry.
- Computer: database, spreadsheet, and word‑processing software.
- Analytical and problem‑solving abilities.
Regular requirement to sit up to 2/3 of the time; occasional lifting/moving up to 50 lbs. Environment: office, field, construction.
