Overview

The Fire Alarm Designer position operates with minimal supervision to complete project designs and submittals. This role requires familiarity with SFP’s quality documents, procedures, and work instructions as they relate to the design function.

Responsibilities
  • Design fire detection/alarm, clean agent fire suppression, pre-engineered fire suppression, non-water-based fire protection, and low voltage/security systems using knowledge of fire alarm codes.
  • Adept with battery and voltage drop calculations.
  • Prepare submittal packages for submission to the Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) and handle subsequent correspondence to achieve design approval.
  • Participate in coordination meetings with contractors and in design kick-off meetings.
  • With assistance from the Design Manager, a Senior Sprinkler Designer, or others, prepare project submittals including voltage calculation drops, materials and equipment for installation, and requisition materials for the job.
  • With assistance from the Design Manager, a Senior Sprinkler Designer, or others, perform field surveys to ensure the design is appropriate for the structure.
  • Assist field personnel with design-related installation issues.
  • Prepare and submit final job close-out documents after final acceptance testing.
  • Understand and follow SFP’s Safety program, SDS book, Hazardous Communication program, policies and procedures; know where all related safety documentation is maintained on each project.
  • Periodically attend seminars or training sessions to stay current with technology, codes, and standards changes.
  • Communicate with internal and external customers professionally.
  • Other duties may be assigned.
Qualifications

The following qualifications are representative of the elements required to perform the job successfully. An equivalent combination of education, training, certifications, and experience may meet the requirements.

Education, Training, Certifications
  • HS Diploma or equivalent required.
  • NICET II or NICET III and/or state-required certification required. Equivalent experience will be considered if the individual pursues NICET education.
Experience, Knowledge, Skill Requirements
  • 1-2 years’ experience as an alarm designer is strongly preferred.
  • Construction experience, mechanical aptitude, and math skills (basic and advanced) required.
Communication Skills
  • Must be able to read, write, and communicate effectively in English with employees and customers.
Systems and Software Skills
  • Ability to operate a computer and use Microsoft Office.
  • Familiarity with Alarm

    CAD, AutoCAD, and/or other CAD software is preferred.
Other Qualifications
  • Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
  • Ability to comply with SFP’s Drug and Alcohol policy and Background screening requirements, including customer-specific requirements based on contractual agreement.

Physical Requirements:

While performing duties, the employee may sit for long periods and may occasionally bend, kneel, balance, lift up to 20 lb, walk, stand, ascend/descend stairs, drive, twist, and reach above and below shoulder. The employee will frequently drive and walk for periods.

Work Environment:
The employee will primarily work indoors in an office setting, with occasional outdoor work; exposure to hot/cold temperatures, dust, fumes, chemicals, electrical hazards, and noise. Personal protective equipment may be required per company safety policies while visiting locations.
