Position Summary
UNM Career Services is seeking a highly motivated candidate for the position of Professional Intern. This role is ideal for someone with a strong interest in career advisement, career and professional development, human resources, training and development, student affairs in higher education, or related fields. This position offers hands‑on experience in program planning and development, cross‑campus collaborations, informational presentations and training, short and long‑term planning, and supports the overall goals of Career Services.

The professional internship provides on‑job training to current students or recent graduates, focusing on coaching, mentoring, training, and advising UNM students throughout the career development process.
The selected intern will receive training and mentorship in planning and carrying out activities and assignments, with a development plan to achieve paraprofessional competencies. The intern reports to the Career Counseling Manager and works with all Career Services staff.
Duties and Responsibilities- Provide entry‑level services under supervision of senior staff.
- Undertake and/or participate in projects designed to support Career Services.
- Assist in planning and implementation of projects and initiatives.
- Interact with students, employers, staff, faculty, and community partners.
- Receive guidance, training, and mentoring in activity planning.
- Provide day‑to‑day guidance to student employees and/or interns as needed.
- Perform miscellaneous job‑related duties as assigned.
Skills and Abilities
Required
- Familiarity with Communication, Journalism, English, Psychology, Business with Human Resources focus, Educational Leadership, Organization, Information, and Learning Sciences, or a related field.
- Entry‑level knowledge and skills at the Bachelor's or Master's level in the relevant disciplines.
- Ability to understand and follow detailed instructions.
- Project planning skills.
- Ability to work independently and in a team.
- Effective oral and written communication skills.
- Must present transcripts before a formal offer is extended.
- Compliance with the University’s influenza vaccination requirement for patient‑care or clinical roles.
- Fixed‑term position, typically up to 24 months.
Must have obtained a Bachelor’s or higher degree no more than 24 months prior to the date of hire. If the degree was earned more than 24 months earlier, the individual must be currently enrolled in a Bachelor’s (or higher) program. No previous work experience required.
Preferred Qualifications- Currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Communication, Journalism, English, Psychology, Business with Human Resources focus, Educational Leadership, Organization, Information, or Learning Sciences.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong customer service skills.
- Familiarity with Handshake or willingness to learn quickly.
- 1–3 years’ experience writing/editing promotional and informational materials.
- 1–3 years’ experience teaching, training, tutoring, coaching, or presenting to individuals or groups.
