Position Summary

The Museum Studies Program at the University of New Mexico invites applications for a Professor of Practice in Museum Studies to begin in August 10, 2026. This is a full‑time, Professor of Practice position in Museum Studies. Applicants must have a terminal degree (Master’s, MFA, or PhD) in Museum Studies or a related field by June 30, 2026.

We seek an accomplished individual who demonstrates a commitment to interdisciplinary practice, who can offer undergraduate and graduate courses in Museum Studies, and who is prepared to take an active role in mentoring students in a Master’s program with an excellent record of preparing our graduates for careers in the museum profession.

Duties include teaching courses in‑person and online each semester, holding a terminal degree in Museum Studies or a related discipline with significant experience as a museum professional, and working with Native American heritage and communities.

    Qualifications

    Minimum Qualifications:

  • Terminal degree (Masters, MFA or PhD) with specialization in Museum Studies or a related discipline, awarded by June 30, 2026.
  • A minimum of three years of professional museum work.
  • Preferred Qualifications:

  • Range of work experience in museum or cultural institutions.
  • Record of publication or completed projects with a focus on Native American heritage.
  • Teaching experience at the university or college level, including ability to teach upper‑division courses and graduate seminars in Museum Studies.
  • Interest and/or experience in mentoring advanced undergraduates and graduate students; experience in or potential for building relationships and/or collaborative projects with Native communities.
  • A commitment to cultivate an understanding of the rich and varied cultures of New Mexico and to the success of the University’s mission to serve local and global communities.
