This position works as a reading, writing, and math tutor under the direction of Lew Wallace Elementary Kindergarten‑Fifth Grade teachers to provide academic and emotional support through direct instruction, guided practice, and games. Students come in at many levels and the tutor can deliver small group instruction tailored to individual needs, increasing socio‑emotional skills and academic success. Tutors may also prepare or organize tutoring materials.

• Enrolled in a degree‑seeking program at UNM.
• Enrolled at least half‑time (6 hours) at UNM for fall and spring semesters (audit hours do not count).
• If Work‑Study, meet Satisfactory Academic Progress.
• Must have a Work‑Study award.

• Passed the APS background check.
• Be able to read, write, and follow directions in English (knowledge of Spanish helpful).
• Serve as a role model, modeling appropriate language and behavior.
• Be reliable and available 3‑5 times a week at the same time (schedules can be adjusted by semester).
• Will attend a short training session, possibly on a Saturday, and occasional ongoing training during teachers’ prep times.
• Be tolerant and respectful of different cultural perspectives.
• Willing to utilize positive discipline techniques and follow classroom procedures and rules.
• Ability to stay off cell phone while with students.
• For English speakers, able to work between 8:40 am and 3:10 pm (or until 4:00 pm during Genius Hour).
• Patient, positive attitude, good question‑asking skills, hardworking, and self‑directed.
