Position Summary

The Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology (CCB) at The University of New Mexico (UNM) invites applications for an Assistant Professor in Organic Chemistry to begin in August 10, 2026. This full‑time, tenure‑track position focuses on experimental organic chemistry with research interests in optoelectronic materials and/or biomaterials. Applicants must have a PhD in Chemistry or a closely related field by the date of application.

Responsibilities

Applicants should demonstrate expertise in organic chemistry. The successful candidate will: teach core, required undergraduate and graduate courses in organic chemistry and elective courses in materials; supervise graduate students; and contribute to the visibility of the department through service and outreach activities. The faculty member is expected to establish a leading research program distinguished by national recognition and continuous external funding that aligns with departmental strategic goals and leverages local resources, including NMR and mass spectrometry facilities, nearby federal laboratories, and institutional collaborations.

Qualifications

Minimum

Ph.D. in Chemistry or a closely related field by the date of application.

Evidence of primary specialization in organic chemistry, with research emphasis/interest in optoelectronic materials and/or biomaterials.

Post‑doctoral research experience.

Interest and ability to teach organic chemistry at the undergraduate and graduate levels.

Preferred

Demonstrated potential to develop a nationally recognized, externally‑funded research program, as evidenced through experience, publication record, and research statement.

Strong commitment to teaching organic chemistry to students of all levels and backgrounds, as evidenced in the teaching statement and CV.

Interest in leveraging resources by establishing collaborations with researchers at UNM and local institutions, as evidenced in the research statement.

Willingness to increase departmental visibility through service and outreach activities, as evidenced in the cover letter.

Commitment to cultivating an understanding of the rich and varied cultures of New Mexico and supporting UNM’s mission to serve local and global communities, as evidenced in the cover letter.
