Position Summary

The Department of Music at the University of New Mexico invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor of Guitar, to begin in August 2026. Applicants must hold a master’s degree in music by the time of appointment. For best consideration, all application materials must be received by November 3, 2025

We seek an artist level teacher whose research centers on classical guitar, with preference given to candidates with Flamenco experience and familiarity with Mariachi, Jazz, Commercial, Latin and other genres. This Assistant Professor will serve as music faculty and teach applied guitar lessons, chamber music, and other courses as needed to undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in the numerous degrees offered by the Department of Music.

UNM has a world‑renowned Flamenco program and the successful candidate will help build stronger connections between the Theatre, Dance and Music Programs. Additionally, guitar is thriving in our region and the successful candidate will support the numerous guitar programs in public schools and within the community. The candidate will establish an active schedule of recruitment and interaction with music educators in the metropolitan area, throughout the state, nationally and internationally.

Further responsibilities include contributing to Department, College and University Service, fostering interdisciplinary partnerships across UNM; and cultivating strong ties with the local community. We seek a colleague with a demonstrated commitment to advancing understanding of the rich and varied cultures of New Mexico and supporting UNM’s mission to serve local and global communities.

  • Recordings: 3‑5 links to recent (within five years) unedited, high quality digital recordings (either audio or video) of pieces or excerpts representing diverse selections totaling approximately 20 minutes.
  • Repertoire: A repertoire list of works performed.
  • Programs: Three printed programs of full concerts (including recitals) performed in the last 3‑5 years.
  • Teaching: 30‑minute video of the candidate teaching a private guitar lesson within the past two years.
  • References: Names, phone numbers, and e‑mail addresses of 3‑5 professional references.
  • Unofficial transcripts: of undergraduate and graduate coursework.
  • Preferred Qualifications
  • Artist level teacher: International/national artist level guitarist and teacher as verified by CV and letter of intent.
  • Flamenco: Ability to support colleagues and students with the UNM Flamenco Program.
  • Research specialization: Collaborative and musical experiences outside of the western canon of musical including but not limited to Flamenco, Mariachi, Jazz, Comercial, Latin, Etc.
  • Recruitment: Vision to create and ability to execute recruiting initiatives.
  • Communication: Strong oral and written communication, organizational and administrative skills as demonstrated by submitted application materials, references and interviews.
  • Commitment to mission: A demonstrated commitment to cultivate an understanding of the rich and varied cultures of New Mexico and to the success of the university's mission to serve local and global communities.
  • Research Vision: A demonstrated commitment to scholarship and a vision for future creative work and/or performance activity as detailed in the application materials and interviews.
