Assistant Professor of Ethnomusicology

Position Summary: The Department of Music at the University of New Mexico invites applications for a full‑time, tenure‑track position at the rank of Assistant Professor of Ethnomusicology. Applicants must hold a terminal degree in music (musicology, ethnomusicology, or a related field) by the time of appointment. The appointment begins August 1, 2026. Applications must be received by November 3, 2025.

Responsibilities: The successful candidate will teach existing undergraduate and graduate courses in music and sound‑centered areas, including musicology, ethnomusicology, world music, music appreciation, music history, and music theory for majors and non‑majors. The candidate will develop new courses, serve on graduate advisory committees, direct master’s theses, and provide dedicated mentorship. The faculty member is expected to sustain an active research agenda, presenting at conferences and publishing peer‑reviewed work.

Collaborative responsibilities include strengthening the graduate program, coordinating the Musicology Colloquium Series, recruiting graduate students, fostering interdisciplinary partnerships especially with Southwest programs, and cultivating strong ties with the local community.

Qualifications: Minimum: terminal degree in music by August 2026; at least two years of college teaching experience; demonstrated record of research and scholarly activity. Preferred: pedagogical excellence, commitment to mentoring diverse students, methodological expertise in ethnographic musicology, clear research agenda focused on Indigenous music and/or sound practices in the U.S. Southwest, language competency in a Southwest language, service experience, and commitment to the mission of serving local and global communities.
