Professor and Department Chair of Architecture
The University of New Mexico seeks an exceptional candidate for the position of Chair of Architecture in the School of Architecture & Planning. The appointment, at the rank of Professor with tenure, is effective August 2026 and will remain open until filled. The position will have a best consideration.
The School of Architecture & Planning houses the Architecture, Community and Regional Planning, and Landscape Architecture departments. It is the only institution of higher education in New Mexico offering professionally accredited degrees in architecture, planning, and landscape architecture, and it also offers graduate certificates in Historic Preservation & Regionalism, Indigenous Planning, and Urban Innovation.
Within the Architecture Department the Bachelor of Arts in Architecture, Master of Architecture, and Master of Science in Architecture programs emphasize building and urban design, healthy communities, arid environments, and indigenous and regional design. The department currently has 15 full‑time faculty, 20 part‑time faculty, over 300 undergraduate students, and over 70 graduate students.
We seek a dynamic leader to advance the department’s excellence in teaching, research, and outreach; foster interdisciplinary collaboration; elevate the program’s national ranking; and support faculty and student development across all ranks. The Chair will report directly to the Dean of the School.
Responsibilities- Terminal degree in Architecture (Master of Architecture, or a doctorate/Ph.D. in Architecture).
- Full professor or associate professor with experience commensurate with a full professor.
- Academic administrative experience.
- Peer‑recognized achievements in academic and professional realms, with national and/or international recognition.
- Outstanding teaching achievements in higher education and significant contributions to practice and/or research.
- Specialization within architecture or a related discipline, demonstrated by a Ph.D., licensure, research, and/or substantial contributions to the field.
- Knowledge of, and experience with, professional and philanthropic support, alumni engagement, and community partnerships.
- Commitment to cultivating an understanding of New Mexico’s diverse cultures and advancing UNM’s mission to serve local and global communities.
