Position Summary

The Department of Philosophy at the University of New Mexico invites applications for a full‑time, tenure‑track position in Native American and Indigenous Philosophy at the rank of Assistant Professor. The anticipated start date is August 10 2026. The position involves customary undergraduate and graduate teaching duties, including thesis supervision, and non‑teaching department responsibilities. The successful candidate will contribute to the department’s undergraduate and graduate curricula, mentor and supervise graduate students, and support the department’s philosophically pluralistic environment.

The role is located on the main Albuquerque campus of the College of Arts & Sciences.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in philosophy or a related field by the start date of appointment.
  • Native American and Indigenous Philosophy as a research specialization.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Potential to produce a strong record of publications in Native American and Indigenous Philosophy.
  • Evidence of teaching excellence in a university or college setting.
  • Ability to teach courses that contribute to the department’s existing undergraduate curriculum.
  • Ability to teach courses that contribute to the department’s graduate curriculum.
  • Ability to mentor and supervise graduate students.
  • Ability to work effectively with students and colleagues.
  • Ability to work effectively in a philosophically pluralistic department.
  • A demonstrated commitment to cultivating an understanding of the rich and varied cultures of New Mexico and to the university’s mission to serve local and global communities.

  • Curriculum Vitae: Include a list of all college‑ or university‑level courses taught and the full contact information of referees. Confidential reference letters should be submitted following the instructions provided on page 6 of the application guide.
  • Writing Sample: A journal article or book chapter length sample evidencing potential or actual publishing in Native American and Indigenous Philosophy.
  • Statement of Perspectives: A one‑page statement summarizing your perspectives on the place of Native American and Indigenous Philosophy in the discipline of philosophy and within the UNM Department of Philosophy.
  • Teaching Philosophy: No more than 15 pages of evidence of teaching effectiveness, which may include peer or student evaluations and syllabi for recently taught or planned Philosophy courses.
  • Reference Letters: At least three confidential letters of recommendation sent via e‑mail to philunm with your name in the subject line. All letters must be received by November 30 2025.
  • All attachments must be clearly titled and submitted in PDF format. Do not submit until all required documents are ready for upload.
