Position Summary

The University of New Mexico Comprehensive Cancer Center (UNMCCC) and the Department of Internal Medicine, Division of Hematology/Oncology at the UNM School of Medicine, invite applications from physicians or physician scientists with training and expertise in medical oncology and a focused interest in clinical care, clinical and translational research, and clinical trials for patients with breast malignancies. The successful applicant will participate in the multidisciplinary clinical care of patients and in the design and conduct of cancer clinical trials as a member of the UNMCCC Multidisciplinary Working Group in Breast Malignancies.

These are Open Rank, Open Track positions. Faculty rank and appointment will be commensurate with accomplishments. The successful applicants will have fellowship training or experience in the clinical care of breast cancers and strong interest in the development of clinical trials, precision medicine, and immune therapies for breast cancer. Emphasis is placed on the ability to participate in multidisciplinary clinical trial teams, collaborate with laboratory and population science investigators, and participate in the teaching mission of the Division and the UNMCCC.

The University of New Mexico Comprehensive Cancer Center (UNMCCC) is the Official Cancer Center of New Mexico and the only National Cancer Institute (NCI) Designated Comprehensive Cancer Center in a 500-mile radius. The 136 oncology physicians, 123 cancer research scientists, and staff are particularly focused on discovering the causes and the cures for cancers that disproportionately affect the people of the American Southwest - primarily Hispanic, American Indian, and Non-Hispanic White - with strikingly different patterns of cancer incidence, mortality and disparity.

The Center treated 15,106 unique patients in almost 105,000 ambulatory clinic visits in FY24. A total of 2,075 patients participated in cancer clinical trials to study new cancer treatments that include tests of novel cancer prevention strategies and cancer genome sequencing. The UNMCCC has outstanding research programs in Cancer Control and Population Sciences;
Cellular and Molecular Oncology, and Cancer Therapeutics. These programs house several national centers including: PECGS Participant Engagement and Genome Sequencing Network and the Route 66 Endometrial SPORE program. Rich collaborations with UNMCCC partners (Sandia and Los Alamos National Laboratories; Lovelace Biomedical) with unparalleled computing and technology infrastructure enrich our research endeavors. The UNMCCC is the center of a collaborative statewide cancer clinical trials and health delivery research network and is funded by a NCI NCORP Grant (Minority/Underserved).

Center members have been awarded $38.3 million in federal and private grants and contracts for cancer research projects. Since 2015 they have provided education and training experiences to more than 750 high school, undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral fellowship students in cancer research and cancer health care delivery. Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • MD or combined MD/PhD degree or equivalent degree with board certification in Internal Medicine;
  • Board Certified in Medical Oncology or Eligible for Certification in Medical Oncology
  • Experience in cancer clinical trials with a focused interest in breast malignancies, and
  • Must be eligible to work in the U.S.

  • Additional fellowship training in breast medical oncology;
