Hygienist

Overview

Dental Hygienist or Dental Hygiene Faculty (DHF), reporting to the Director of Dental Hygiene, will perform services on patients seen at Touro Dental Health, encompassing traditional and expanded dental hygiene. At the discretion of the Director, the DHF will assist with student evaluations, counseling, and assessment, as well as prepare selection of course materials for didactic, laboratory, and clinical activities. The Hygienist will guide student dentists in managing, appointing, and recalling oral hygiene patients.

This position requires OSHA training, exposure to blood and other bodily fluids, and enforcement of HIPAA regulations when accessing PHI.

• Performing routine dental prophylaxis and periodontal maintenance
• Performing non-surgical periodontal therapy (scaling/root planing)
• Placing locally applied antimicrobial medicaments
• Placing sealants/perform polishing
• Oral cancer screening
• Administering local anesthesia
• Maintaining accurate electronic patient health records
• Taking annual digital x-rays
• Accurately charting periodontal conditions
• Applying fluoride when appropriate
• Counselling patients on oral hygiene and nutrition
• Performing Zoom whitening
• Teaching, guiding, and working with students on all listed procedures
• Evaluating student progress
• Teaching the Initial Periodontal Treatment Lab Course as part of student preclinical education
• Adhering to confidentiality, state, federal, and HIPAA laws regarding patient records
• Collaborating collegially with colleagues in a respectful workplace, complying with EEO rules and regulations

• Required BS in Dental Hygiene or Allied Health Sciences
• Dental Hygienist NM License: required
• Minimum 3 years of clinical experience as a Dental Hygienist
• Teaching experience a plus
• Experience with dental practice management systems such as Axi Um
• Basic Life Support / CPR certification or recent related course completion

• Knowledge of medications used in dental hygiene practice
• Knowledge of health record keeping and dental charting
• Knowledge of OSHA blood borne pathogen standards and safety adherence
• Basic computer skills
• Excellent oral and written communication skills
• Ability to organize and prioritize tasks
• Ability to work under pressure
• Strong attention to detail and problem-solving skills
• Capacity to work independently and as a team member
• Ability to educate patients across the lifespan on oral hygiene and periodontal disease options

• Fluent in English;
