The Department of Computer Science in the School of Engineering at the University of New Mexico is seeking a highly motivated and energetic individual with excellent customer service skills to join our dynamic team as an Accountant
3. Computer Science is a highly research‑active academic department seeking someone with strong attention to detail and fundamental accounting skills, as well as assertiveness, patience, excellent oral and written communication, and superb organizational skills. The preferred candidate will be a self‑motivated, resourceful, results‑driven professional. This position requires strong interpersonal, critical thinking, and problem‑solving skills as the Accountant 3 position interacts with staff, faculty, students and leadership of all levels.
The qualified candidate will be skilled in budget development, financial tracking and reporting; be able to investigate, interpret and analyze financial data; be adept at record keeping and information gathering, and is customer‑service‑focused. Accurate and complete monitoring, review, and reconciliation of accounts is a major aspect of this position.
Key Responsibilities- Oversee daily processing and accounting for revenue and expenditures for all aspects of the department; ensure accuracy, completeness, and compliance with university, local, state, and federal requirements and standard accounting and audit procedures.
- Interpret and analyze financial operations and transactions, forecast trends, and develop special reports for faculty and the Department Chair.
- Perform full contract/grant pre‑award and post‑award processes for the department to include budget preparation, proposal submission, and work closely with the PI and UNM Office of Sponsored Projects.
- Prepare, review, and process budget, revenue, expense, payroll, and related entries including JVs, PHAREDS, and ePAFs.
- Perform or oversee lower‑level staff fiscal activities, including processing purchasing requisitions, direct pay requests, journal vouchers, PCard purchases, and Chrome River reimbursements.
- Review purchasing, travel, and personnel requests for availability of funding, accuracy, coding and distribution of account numbers.
- Manage the annual Budget and Salary Planner, mid‑year review, and categorization of reserves processes.
- Compile, analyze and review the budgets and expenditures for each award at least monthly, with reports to each PI.
- Serve as primary liaison with the contract and grant accounting office and fiscal monitor for Computer Science.
Bachelor's degree and successful completion of at least 15 credit hours of university‑level accounting through intermediate accounting; at least 3 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year‑for‑year basis.
Preferred Qualifications- Master’s Degree in accounting or related field.
- Experience in supervising lower‑level staff, including coaching, performance reviews, and corrective discussions.
- Experience in annual budget development, analysis and presentation.
- Proficiency in MS Excel to analyze/interpret financial data and prepare financial reports.
- Experience working in UNM systems including:
MyReports, Banner Finance, Work Flow, Lobo Mart, Effort Certifications System, EPAFs, Budget Planner, Salary Planner, and Budget Categorization System. - Knowledge of Restricted accounting (sponsored projects, contract and grant management).
- Experience in providing guidance and support to faculty and staff regarding accounting related issues and UNM policies and procedures.
- Excellent time management skills with the ability to prioritize projects and deadlines.
