The purpose of the School Resource Officer is to provide students with a safe and comfortable environment within the City School System and areas of the City where youth may be present.

The School Resource Officer shall perform but is not limited to the following functions.

• Coordinate with and assist the Police Department in performing periodic drug dog detection checks of the Albertville High School and Alabama Avenue Middle School. These checks will be coordinated with each principal and should be kept as confidential as possible as to not alert the students.
• Patrol all areas of the assigned school including patrolling the parking lot before and after school.
• Assist school officials in the enforcement of all rules and regulations.
• Maintain a confidential file on all juvenile gangs and gang members.
• Maintain data on potential problem juveniles who may be a threat to educations, law enforcement officials and the community.
• Assist school officials with sports activities, pep rallies, and any other activities as needed.
• Perform limited public relations functions to educate, citizens, civic groups, governmental officials, media, and other agencies, interested in this program.
• Assist officials with the Marshall County Juvenile Probation Office in the enforcement of laws.
• Maintain high moral standards at all times. This will ensure that the school resource officer will be a positive role model for our young people.
• Responsible for the office he/she is assigned to including and City issued equipment.
• Keep supervisor informed of all weekly activities outside of routine job performance.
• Maintain a good working relationship with all school officials.
• Escort students to and from their vehicles during school hours in the event the student needs to retrieve something from their vehicle.
• Transport students from school as needed when their parents cannot be contacted.
• Assist students who may be experiencing car trouble.
• Counsel students as needed relating to personal problems they may have.
• Interact with students during breaks, class changes and all other school functions.
• Possess the ability to speak publicly.

Training and experience equivalent to:

• High School Diploma or equivalent
• Be a sworn Police Officer and have a minimum of two (2) years’ experience in Law Enforcement.
• Valid Alabama driver’s license with the ability to be insured by the city’s liability insurance carrier.
• Possess a strong desire to work with the youth of Albertville.
