Minimum Qualifications
- Education:
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Completion of advanced vocational, technical, or trade school training in automotive, diesel, or heavy equipment technology preferred.
- Experience:
- Minimum of 2-5 years of progressive hands‑on experience in vehicle diagnostics, maintenance, and complex repairs in a dealership, commercial fleet, or heavy‑duty service environment preferred.
- Demonstrated experience mentoring or training junior technicians is preferred.
- Licenses/Certifications:
- Valid driver’s license required.
- Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Master Technician certification or equivalent preferred.
- OEM‑specific certifications (e.g., Diesel Engines) preferred.
- Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) or ability to obtain one is preferred.
- Technical Proficiency:
- Advanced diagnostic skills with proficiency in using electronic diagnostic tools and manufacturer software.
- Strong ability to interpret complex wiring diagrams, technical bulletins, and repair manuals.
- Other Requirements:
- Ability to work independently and provide technical leadership to others.
- Must meet the physical demands of the job, including lifting heavy parts and working in confined spaces.
- Flexibility to work overtime, weekends, or on‑call as required.
- Oversee Daily Shop Operations and Workflow
- Review incoming repair orders to assess workload, priority, and technician skill alignment.
- Assign jobs to technicians based on capabilities, availability, and urgency.
- Monitor repair progress throughout the day and make adjustments to maintain productivity and meet promise times.
- Coordinate workflow between service advisors, parts department, and technicians to ensure efficient shop operations.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for technical escalations and complex repair situations.
- Provide Advanced Diagnostics and Technical Expertise
- Perform high‑level diagnostics on the most difficult, unusual, or escalated repairs.
- Verify diagnostic conclusions of junior or mid‑level technicians when additional confirmation is needed.
- Guide technicians through advanced troubleshooting procedures and ensure accurate root‑cause analysis.
- Maintain mastery of manufacturer systems, service procedures, and technical updates.
- Ensure Quality Control and Repair Accuracy
- Conduct final inspections on repairs requiring senior‑level oversight.
- Verify that completed work meets manufacturer, safety, and company standards.
- Review repair documentation and confirm completeness, accuracy, and compliance.
- Test drive vehicles post‑repair to ensure safe and proper operation when required.
- Identify recurring repair issues and collaborate with service management to address underlying causes.
- Support and Develop Technicians
- Mentor, train, and support apprentice, junior, and intermediate technicians.
- Demonstrate proper diagnostic methods, repair techniques, and use of specialty tools.
- Provide constructive feedback on performance, quality, and efficiency.
- Assist in onboarding new technicians and guiding them through shop expectations and processes.
- Promote a learning environment by sharing technical knowledge and best practices.
- Coordinate with Service Advisors and Parts Department
- Communicate clearly with service advisors regarding repair status, additional findings, and required approvals.
- Work directly with parts personnel to identify needed components, resolve parts delays, and support accurate parts sourcing.
- Provide accurate labor times and technical explanations to support estimate creation and customer communication.
- Help service advisors understand complex repair needs so they can relay information accurately to customers.
- Maintain Safety, Cleanliness, and Regulatory Compliance
- Model and enforce safe work practices and adherence to OSHA, DOT, and shop safety standards.
- Conduct routine safety inspections of equipment, lifts, and work areas.
- Ensure technicians follow proper procedures for hazardous materials, waste disposal, and environmental compliance.
- Promote a clean, organized, and hazard‑free shop environment.
- Perform Advanced and Complex Repairs
- Carry out the most technically demanding vehicle repairs, overhauls, and diagnostic procedures.
