Job Summary

This pooled position accepts applications on an ongoing basis to create a qualified candidate pool. When a role becomes available, we review applications from this pool and may interview candidates whose qualifications best match the opening.

As an Adult Basic Skills instructor, you will provide instructional programs that meet the needs of students in compliance with the Adult Education Act. You will be responsible to the Dean of Academic Foundations and Extended Learning (or designated designees) for assigned instructional duties and for any additional duties assigned by your immediate supervisor.

Responsibilities
  • Act as a team member of the Adult Basic Skills Department.
  • Instruct assigned basic skills and GED preparation classes.
  • Monitor and evaluate learning progress and determine learning needs.
  • Provide a classroom environment conducive to student learning.
  • Teach classes following approved course outlines, prepare and develop materials, and provide students with course syllabi reflecting course objectives.
  • Participate in Learning Standards training and ongoing professional development.
  • Maintain close supervision of student attendance.
  • Participate in curriculum development, recommend instructional materials, and suggest course outline revisions.
  • Maintain college facilities and equipment.
  • Keep abreast of technological changes and innovations in the subject area; pursue continuous professional development.
  • Attend staff meetings, collaborate with colleagues, respond to emails and departmental requests promptly, and represent the department at relevant meetings.
  • Promote a positive image of the college and its programs.
  • Participate in student recruitment and retention processes.
  • Participate in assessment of classroom learning.
  • Maintain posted office hours and provide class time for advising and support.
Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in education or a related field, or an equivalent combination of experience and training related to teaching and/or working with the GED population.

One year of full or part‑time instructional experience teaching adults.

Documented ability to plan and implement instructional programs appropriate for adult learners.

Proficient use of computers.

Ability to work respectfully with individuals of diverse cultures, backgrounds, perspectives, and abilities.

Effective communication skills and ability to function as a member of a team.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s degree with a major in Adult Education, Reading, English, Math or related field, or completion of 27 graduate quarter hours in Education or related discipline.
  • Valid or prior Oregon 7‑12 teaching license.
  • Fluent in Spanish.
  • Knowledge of strategies and techniques for instructing students with disabilities.
  • Experience teaching adults in ABE/GED or alternative programs.
  • Experience teaching basic computer skills.
  • Teaching experience at a community college.
Salary & Compensation

Courses are paid on a per‑credit basis. New part‑time faculty begin at Step 1 of the pay scale and may advance each term if eligible.

The cost per credit for each step and compensation per hour for meetings, training, advising, curriculum development, or other related work are detailed in the college’s pay scale tables (Table 1 and Table
3). All new employees are required to be compensated via direct deposit.
