OverviewThe Athletic Coach is responsible for leading a team of student athletes, developing and implementing training programs, and promoting a culture of excellence within the athletic department. This role works closely with the Director of Athletics to achieve program goals, maintain a safe and supportive environment for student-athletes, and adhere to school policies and regulations.
Responsibilities- Instruction and leadership:
Instruct and demonstrate skill sets and techniques necessary for individual and team achievement in the designated sport(s). - Program development:
Develop and implement comprehensive training programs and practice schedules to enhance team performance and athlete development, including game/meet strategies. - Game strategy:
Create and execute game/meet strategy and fundamentals to achieve competitive success. - Off-season workouts:
Coordinate and design off-season workouts and strength training for the entire program (when age/sport appropriate). - Scheduling and logistics:
Collaborate with the Director of Athletics to build a competitive and balanced schedule and ensure timely delivery of required documents and approvals. - Staff management:
Hire, evaluate, and support additional coaching staff for all program teams in partnership with the Director of Athletics. - Equipment maintenance:
Ensure proper cleaning, storage, and maintenance of all athletic equipment and uniforms, with updated inventories. - Record keeping:
Maintain accurate records and complete required paperwork in a timely manner. - Health and safety:
Obtain and maintain proper medical forms and current records. - Student supervision:
Supervise students at home and away games, ensuring appropriate behavior and adherence to school policies. - Reporting and communication:
Finalize roster reports and submit attendance records; report game/meet results, ejections, and disqualifications; communicate regularly with families of student-athletes; submit completed injury reports to the Director of Athletics, School Leader, and School Nurse; keep all stakeholders informed. - Family communication:
Communicate and collaborate with families regarding progress and expectations. - Problem reporting:
Report problems promptly to the Director of Athletics. - Policy enforcement:
Enforce all school policies during home and away events. - Transportation:
Arrange and share transportation for athletes to away games/meets or off-site practices using provided buses. - Additional duties:
Perform other duties as outlined by the Director of Athletics. - Equity commitment:
Maintain commitment to anti-racism, equity, and racial justice, engaging stakeholders in this work to support students. - Compliance:
Adhere to charter, federal, state, and local laws and regulations, including NYS Department of Education, Department of Health, and NYS Office of Children and Family Services; follow organization policies and participate in continuous improvement initiatives.
Education and Experience
- High School Diploma/GED required. Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education, Sports Management, or a related field is preferred.
- 2+ years experience as an educator or athletic coach at various levels; high school coaching experience in the respective sport(s) is preferred.
- Valid NYSPHSAA coaching certification and First Aid/CPR/AED certification (or willingness to obtain upon hire).
- Knowledge of the sport, training techniques, and player development; experience working with students, preferably in charter, private, or public schools; urban school experience is a plus.
- Ability to work a flexible schedule outside regular hours; ability to foster an inclusive environment that values diverse backgrounds and perspectives.
- If currently employed by KIPP Capital Region, must be in good standing.
- Ability to stand, walk, and move during practices and games; required bending, stooping, squatting, and stair climbing as needed.
- Ability to demonstrate skills and actively participate in practices and games; endurance for prolonged activity.
- Ability to access all school facilities and read, write, and speak English fluently.
- Dexterity to operate standard office machines and equipment; occasional ability to lift and move up to 20 pounds.
