Duties Description
Under the direction of the Maintenance Supervisor 1 and Property Staff the incumbent will:
- Possess a valid NYS Driver’s License.
- Lift 50 lbs.
- Operate material handling equipment and move furniture and office equipment as needed at various sites.
- Perform building construction tasks typical of a variety of trade specialties.
- Perform semi‑skilled carpentry activities, including repairing doors, windows, window sashes, storm windows, stairs, railings, furniture, locks, and door hardware.
- Operate shop machinery to make and assemble bookcases, shelves, tables, trenches, signs, and modular furniture.
- Erect and move partitions, paint, and decorate work by performing interior and exterior painting (not requiring fine finish or decorative treatment); stain and finish wood and furniture.
- Use painting equipment, install wallpaper, and spray‑paint surfaces and equipment.
- Lay and repair electrical/data cables and wires.
- Install and maintain lighting fixtures, outlets, and switches; adjust electrical equipment contacts.
- Initiate and maintain relationships across a diverse set of stakeholders.
- Travel within the Capital Region and occasionally throughout NYS to complete work orders or moves as required.

- Two years of full‑time experience in maintenance or mechanical work under the supervision of a skilled tradesperson; OR completion of an appropriate two‑year technical school course at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services, such as the New York State Civil Service Employees Association–Partnership (NYS CSEA‑P) Applied Skilled Trades Certificate Program; or an equivalent combination of experience and training gained by completion of appropriate technical courses at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services.
- Successful completion of the NYS CSEA‑P Applied Skilled Trades Certificate Program includes a total of 288 hours of trade‑specific classroom instruction, 45 hours of technical math coursework, 45 hours of technical communications coursework, and 15 hours of blueprint/schematic reading coursework. It does not include the 4,000 hours of on‑the‑job training, as required for the NYS CSEA‑P Applied Skilled Trades Traineeship.
When required to operate motor vehicles, candidates must possess a valid New York State driver’s license appropriate for the type of vehicle to be operated.
Preferred Qualifications- Initiate and maintain relationships across a diverse set of stakeholders.
- Possess a valid NYS CDL.
- Lift 50 lbs.
- Operate material handling equipment.
- Perform basic building maintenance and repair tasks using the appropriate tools and equipment.
- Utilize computer equipment to complete work order documentation.
- Perform vehicle safety inspections as required.
- Candidates with no previous state service will begin at the starting rate of the salary range listed above.

- Because this position requires travel, the appointee must have a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State and have a motor vehicle or otherwise demonstrate capacity to meet transportation needs of the position.
- Employment at the Department of Labor is contingent upon the maintenance of a valid work authorization and necessary documentation to work legally in the United States.
- Due to operational requirements and funding considerations of various divisions/positions, there may be occasions where unit assignments change. Should this occur, it will not impact your title, salary, or location.
