Responsibilities
The Research Scientist II will perform sequencing related tasks associated with HIV and Hepatitis C virus (HCV) for the Bloodborne Viruses Laboratory. These tasks will include extraction and amplification of nucleic acids for sequencing, analysis of sequencing data using bioinformatics tools, and clinical validation of new sequencing assays.
The Research Scientist II will also prepare standard operating procedures, reports, manuscript sections, and oral and poster presentations. Duties also include processing of human biospecimens, clinical testing using molecular or serological test methods, training and supervision of staff, quality assurance activities and laboratory maintenance tasks.
This position will be part of a dynamic team serving the Wadsworth Center's mission in the New York State Department of Health's efforts to protect and promote the health of New York's citizens. Come be a part of Science in the Pursuit of Health!
Minimum QualificationsBachelor's degree in a chemical, biological, clinical or medical laboratory science, or medical technology and three years of research experience; OR a master's degree in a chemical, biological, clinical or medical laboratory science, or medical technology and two years of research experience; OR a doctorate in a related field. Degrees must be from an accredited institution.
This position will require the incumbent to meet all Federal requirements for staff who perform clinical testing, including the educational requirements.
Preferred QualificationsAt least one year of experience with molecular techniques including DNA extraction, polymerase chain reaction, transcription mediated amplification, and sequencing methods. At least one year of experience in molecular data analysis and the use of scientific software to analyze sequence data for the detection and/or characterization of pathogens. At least one year of experience handling and processing human blood specimens in a clinical laboratory environment.
Excellent written and oral communication skills.
Grant funded position. Compliance with funding requirements such as time and effort reporting, grant deliverables, and contract deliverables is required.
Visa sponsorship may be available for this position, in accordance with applicable federal requirements.
Travel, up to 10%, will be required.
The selected candidate must reside within a reasonable commuting distance of the official work location specified in the job posting and must also be located in or willing to relocate to one of the following states:
New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Vermont, or Massachusetts, prior to hire.
This position may be eligible for a hybrid work schedule on a very limited/infrequent basis, based on operational needs and management approval.
Exposure to potentially hazardous substances may be involved with this position. Therefore, the incumbent may be required to wear personal protective clothing and equipment.
