Duties Overview
The Research Scientist 4 (RS4) incumbents will have primary responsibilities to lead scientific research and surveillance activities and act as Team Lead in maintaining data environments and providing data management oversight for opioid team members. The incumbents will be responsible for the scientific research and adoption of modern methodologies and technologies for data linkages, assessments of data sources for inclusion, selection, and development of indicators for analyses, development and implementation of analysis and evaluation plans of the linked data to monitor progress and policy impact to support major state initiatives regarding opioid misuse and overdose prevention.
The incumbents will implement epidemiology, surveillance, scientific research methodologies and evaluation activities of various data sources and the linked data that will overcome the limitations of using individual datasets to fill information gaps and needs to better target interventions and enhance overdose responses.
Minimum Qualifications A bachelor’s degree in Epidemiology, Statistics/Biostatistics, Public Health, Biology, Biomedical Science, Engineering, Environmental Health, Environmental Science, Infection Control, Mathematics or a closely related degree field AND five (5) years of full-time, professional scientific research experience in an appropriate field. Substitutions: master’s degree in Epidemiology, Statistics/Biostatistics, Public Health, Biology, Biomedical Science, Engineering, Environmental Health, Environmental Science, Infection Control, Mathematics or a closely related degree field may substitute for one year of experience, and Doctorate or Ph.D. in Epidemiology, Statistics/Biostatistics, Public Health, Biology, Biomedical Science, Engineering, Environmental Health, Environmental Science, Infection Control, Mathematics or a closely related degree field may substitute for an additional year of experience.
Preferred Qualifications Master’s degree in Public Health or related field and four years of experience in public health research, surveillance or evaluation; or a doctorate in Public Health or related field and two years of experience in public health research, surveillance or evaluation; experience in grant application development and management. Proficiency in using data analysis, database and statistical software, interpretation, and dissemination of data for varied audiences as part of performing independent scientific research.
Experience with deterministic and probabilistic data matching methodology and algorithms, analyzing large public health data, especially using time-to-event methodology in the performance of scientific research. Intermediate or advanced proficiency using SAS including proficient use of SAS BASE, SQL, GRAPH, STAT, ODS, MACRO, Tableau in the performance of scientific research activities. Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office.
