Responsibilities
Duties are performed under the direction and supervision of a licensed professional engineer. Engineer Trainees/Assistant Engineers work in a variety of programs. Typical duties are grouped by assignment.
- STRUCTURES: Prepare and check designs for bridges and other structural components; prepare and check layouts for entire bridge structures; assist in field inspection of project sites or existing bridges and structures.
- DESIGN: Prepare 3D plans for highway and bridge projects using CADD; assist with the preparation of project reports (e.g., project scoping reports, design reports, drainage reports); develop engineer’s estimates, project scheduling, and site data gathering; develop notes and specifications for specialty work.
- TECHNICAL SERVICES: Provide technical expertise in the Department’s design, construction, and maintenance programs including failure analysis, non‑destructive testing, geotechnical design, and technical support; represent the Department in industry and national expert task groups; research and develop new materials and processes and monitor material performance on Department projects.
- CONSTRUCTION: Serve as Engineer‑In‑Charge of construction projects or assist engineers in supervising and inspecting major construction projects; conduct physical inspections and tests and take measurements of construction in progress and on completion; prepare inspection reports documenting construction progress and contractor compliance with specifications; coordinate activities of contractors, sub‑contractors, utilities, local governments, and other parties to assure contract progress and scheduled completion;
prepare estimates for materials, supplies, and equipment and compute payments to contractors for completed work. - TRAFFIC SAFETY & MOBILITY: Propose, implement and grow Transportation Systems Management and Operations to advance the Department’s Performance and Innovation goals; perform traffic engineering and safety studies including field measurements, computer modeling, and written communication; review, compile and coordinate highway work permits including engineering plans, traffic impact studies, and local projects impacting State Right of Way; assist in all aspects of Work Zone Traffic Control and develop guidance on traffic control matters;
review, issue, and track NYSDOT Regional work orders; develop standard sign design templates and training resources for NYSDOT personnel.
- Engineer Trainee: Either a bachelor’s degree or higher in engineering or engineering technology; or proof of passing the NCEES Fundamentals of Engineering Examination (FE) AND one year of full‑time engineering experience. A 24‑month traineeship leads to Assistant Engineer, Grade 20. Advancement to Assistant Engineer requires FE proof and successful completion of the traineeship. Early advancement to Assistant Engineer is possible after twelve months of the traineeship.
- Assistant Engineer: Either proof of passing the FE and a qualifying bachelor’s degree or higher; or proof of passing the FE and one year of full‑time qualifying engineering experience. Qualifying degrees include Civil Engineering, Construction Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Materials Engineering, Structural Engineering, and Transportation Engineering, among others. Qualifying experience is one year of full‑time engineering experience with transportation projects related to highways, bridges, or traffic systems.
Permanent appointment may be achievable through Civil Service eligible lists or reassignment. - NY HELPS Program: Non‑competitive appointment is possible; all candidates must meet minimum qualifications. Employees hired under NY HELPS will have their non‑competitive employment status converted to competitive status. All rights and privileges of competitive class employees apply. Promotion examinations are available for qualified employees. Educational credentials must be awarded by an accredited institution recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.
- Starting salary for an Engineer Trainee: $66,951.
- Starting salary for an Assistant Engineer: $81,193 (base $74,193 plus geographic differential $7,000).
- Maximum compensation: $101,121 (standard rate $94,121 plus geographic differential $7,000).
- Mid‑Hudson Adjustment: $1,650;
Downstate Adjustment: $3,400 with location applicability.
