Position: Museum Support Services Specialist 1 (NY HELPS), Box OCE-1560/27553
Location: City of Albany

Duties Description

Under the supervision of the Museum Support Specialist 2 – Coordinator of Public Programming, the Museum Support Specialist 1 (Assistant for Public Programming) plays a key role in planning, coordinating, and scheduling of public programs at the New York State Museum. This includes working closely with internal staff, the NYSM Public Programming Committee, colleagues across the Office of Cultural Education, and external partners.

Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Assist in organizing and executing a variety of public programs—both in-person and virtual, live and pre-recorded—by following established approval and implementation procedures
  • Support the development and creation of program scopes that align with the New York State Museum’s mission
  • Prepare proposed programming for review and approval by NYSM leadership and the Public Programming Committee
  • Assist in the facilitating of monthly Public Programming Committee meetings
  • Compile and distribute quarterly program calendars including dates, times, and descriptions for outreach purposes
  • Collaborate Across Teams:
    Work with Museum content experts, community stakeholders, and partners to help ensure programming reflects diverse voices and perspectives
  • Support all aspects of program delivery, including ordering supplies, coordinating A/V and technology needs, setting up event spaces, managing staffing needs, and assisting with promotion and outreach needs
  • Assist with educational initiatives led by the Museum Education Office (MEO), including teacher professional development and adapting programs for CTLE accreditation when appropriate
  • Maintain accurate records of program attendance and track annual participation metrics
  • Public Engagement:
    Serve as the main on-site contact during public programs, providing support and addressing any unforeseen issues as they arise

Minimum Qualifications

Open Competitive:
Bachelor’s degree in education, ethnic studies, gender studies, museum studies, sociology, history, biology, anthropology, archeology, art, or geology, and one year of professional-level experience
* in the conceptual development of exhibits or exhibit-related programs for a major institution or agency with an annual visitation of at least 30,000.

Preferred Qualifications

Special consideration will be given to candidates who possess the following qualifications:

  • Experience in the development and/or implementation of educational or public programming in the subjects of history, art, or the sciences within a museum or cultural institution
  • Demonstrated experience in the management of volunteers or staff members in an educationally-focused capacity within a museum or cultural institution
  • Experience in the implementation of educational programming for students or educators that supports the New York State Learning Standards in a cultural institution
  • Experience in collaboration with content specialists in the fields of science, history, or art to create education or public programming within a cultural institution

Reassignment:
Candidates must have one year of permanent non-competitive service as a Museum Support Specialist 1

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

This will be a permanent, non-competitive appointment. Promotions and transfers may change appointees’ negotiating unit. Candidates should be aware that changes in negotiating units may affect their salary, insurance, and other benefits. Verification of experience and/or transcripts will be required at the time of interview for all candidates. The work schedule for this position is Sunday through Thursday, includes hours of either 8:30AM – 4:30PM or 9:00AM - 5:00PM.

This position leads to a maximum salary of $68,630 based on annual performance advances. For new State employees appointed to graded positions, the annual salary is the hiring rate (beginning of the Salary Range) of the position. Promotion salaries are calculated by the NYS Office of the State Comptroller in accordance with NYS Civil Service Law, OSC Payroll rules and regulations and negotiated union contracts.
