Overview
The New York State Education Department’s Office of Cultural Education (OCE) is seeking an experienced and passionate education professional to serve as the Coordinator of Educational Programs - Museum Support Specialist 2 within the New York State Museum (NYSM). Under the direction of the Director of Education and Visitor Services, the incumbent will be responsible for the management and oversight of educational programs, creation of educational resources, and implementation of museum instructor-led programming.
Responsibilities- Design, coordinate, and deliver inclusive educational programs for K–12 students, educators, and the public, including tours, workshops, and special events that align with the museum’s mission and New York State learning standards.
- Supervise and support the Museum Instructor team, assigning responsibilities, providing instructional guidance, evaluating performance, and fostering professional growth.
- Collaborate with the Director of Education and Visitor Services to develop annual strategic plans and prioritize key initiatives such as educational resources, professional development, and instructor-led programming.
- Lead the development of instructional materials and curriculum guides connected to exhibitions, commemorative months, and museum-based research, in collaboration with content experts and instructional staff.
- Coordinate educator engagement efforts, including CTLE-accredited professional development, school partnerships, teacher workshops, and field trip programming.
- Oversee the planning, development, and execution of youth-focused and out-of-school-time educational initiatives, ensuring program quality, alignment with learning standards, and effective staff supervision.
- Represent the Museum in professional and internal forums, including OCE-wide committees, educator conferences, and museum education networks to advance the institution’s educational goals.
- Evaluate program effectiveness through data collection and feedback to inform continuous improvement in content, delivery, and participant engagement.
This title is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS). For the duration of the NY HELPS Program, this title may be filled via a non-competitive appointment, which means no examination is required but all candidates must meet the minimum qualifications of the title for which they apply. At a future date (within one year of permanent appointment), it is expected employees hired under NY HELPS will have their non-competitive employment status converted to competitive status, without having to compete in an examination.
Employees will then be afforded with all of the same rights and privileges of competitive class employees of New York State. While serving permanently in a NY HELPS title, employees may take part in any promotion examination for which they are qualified.
Non-competitive minimum qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in education, ethnic studies, gender studies, museum studies, sociology, history, biology, anthropology, archeology, art, or geology, and one year of professional-level experience in the conceptual development of exhibits or exhibit-related programs for a major institution or agency with an annual visitation of at least 30,000.
- Substitutions: A master’s degree in any of the above areas may substitute for one year of experience.
Special consideration will be given to candidates who possess the following qualifications:
- Experience in the development and/or implementation of educational or public programming in the subjects of history, art, or the sciences within a museum or cultural institution.
- Demonstrated experience in the management of volunteers or staff members in an educationally-focused capacity within a museum or cultural institution.
- Experience in the implementation of educational programming for students or educators that supports the New York State Learning Standards in a cultural institution.
