Position Overview

The Reading Specialist is a literacy leader responsible for implementing a comprehensive literacy program at the assigned school by being a teacher model, supporting, and guiding teachers in best practices for literacy instruction.

Responsibilities
  • Provide direct instruction in reading and writing for identified groups and individual students, with an emphasis on emergent, beginning, and transitional readers.
  • Deliver direct instruction to students individually, in small groups, or in whole-class settings to develop literacy skills.
  • Use data to inform instructional decisions.
  • Provide students daily feedback on mastery performance in character and academics and plan for individual learning needs.
  • Collaborate with and coach teachers on using assessment data to plan instruction; analyze school literacy data and plan for future literacy needs.
Commitment to School and Classroom Culture
  • Facilitate strong reading instructional strategies through co-teaching to model reading instruction, observing and providing feedback.
  • Identify literature for use in all content areas in support of the curriculum.
  • Provide curriculum support and training for teachers.
  • Be a model of teacher techniques in a variety of settings (whole group and small group) and provide follow-up support.
  • In collaboration with school and regional leadership, select tier 2 instructional materials to meet student needs.
  • Support school leadership with organizational-wide literacy practices and policies.
  • Contribute to the ongoing development of literacy-related learning and development initiatives, providing expertise to create a successful learning environment for students.
Data and Assessment
  • Collaborate with and coach teachers on using assessment data to plan instruction; analyze school literacy data and plan for future literacy needs.
  • Provide ongoing follow-up and support in the use of assessment tools.
  • Assess students using a variety of measures to determine appropriate placement and specific instructional needs.
  • Monitor performance metrics and mechanisms to track needs, trends, the effectiveness of policies and programs, and progress toward objectives.
  • Evaluate qualitative feedback, quantitative data, and observations on a regular basis to inform strategy, decision-making, and accountability.
Family Engagement
  • Establish and maintain strong communication with all families and share progress.
  • Be available for open houses, family-teacher conferences, and other events involving families.
  • Make self available to students, families, and other staff members.
  • Assist with planning and delivery of family workshops and informational sessions involving the literacy program.
