Position Overview

Grade(s): 9-12

The Reading Specialist is a literacy leader responsible for implementing a comprehensive literacy program at the assigned school by being a teacher model, supporting, and guiding teachers in best practices for literacy instruction.

Duties/Responsibilities Curriculum Development and Instruction
  • Provide direct instruction in the areas of reading and writing for identified groups and individual students, with an emphasis on emergent, beginning, and transitional readers.
  • Responsible for providing direct instruction to students, individually, in small groups, or in full groups, to enable students to develop literacy skills.
  • Use data to inform instructional decisions.
  • Provide students daily feedback on mastery performance in character and academics and plan for individual learning needs.
  • Collaborate with and coach teachers on using assessment data to plan instruction; analyze school literacy data and plan for future literacy needs.
Commitment to School and Classroom Culture
  • Facilitate strong reading instructional strategies through:
    • Co-teaching to model reading instruction.
    • Observing and providing feedback.
  • Identify literature for use in all content areas in support of the curriculum.
  • Provide curriculum support and training for teachers.
  • Be a model of teacher techniques in a variety of settings (whole group and small group) and provide follow‑up support.
  • In collaboration with school and regional leadership, select tier 2 instructional materials to meet student needs.
  • Supports School Leadership with organizational wide literacy practices and policies.
  • Contribute to the ongoing development of Literacy related learning and development initiatives, specifically providing expertise to create a successful learning environment for students
Data and Assessment
  • Collaborate with and coach teachers on using assessment data to plan instruction; analyze school literacy data and plan for future literacy needs.
  • Provide ongoing follow‑up and support in the use of assessment tools.
  • Assess students using a variety of measures to determine appropriate placement and specific instructional needs.
  • Monitor performance metrics and mechanisms to track needs, trends, the effectiveness of policies and programs, and progress toward accomplishing objectives.
  • Evaluate qualitative feedback, quantitative data, and observations on a regular basis to inform strategy, decision‑making, and accountability.
Family Engagement
  • Establish and maintain strong communication lines with all families and share progress.
  • Be available for open houses, family‑teacher conferences, and other events involving families.
  • Make self available to students, families, and other staff members.
  • Assist with the planning and delivery of family workshops and informational sessions involving the math program.
