Public Information Specialist
Salary Grade 18: $61,811 - $70,591
The Research Foundation for Mental Hygiene, Inc. is seeking a qualified candidate to fill the position of Public Information Specialist in the Office of Addiction Services and Supports (OASAS), Division of Internal and External Affairs (DI&EA) to serve as a high-impact communications utility player, providing essential support while advancing the agency's digital presence, website management, and communications initiatives to ensure the Division of Internal and External Affairs operates efficiently and meets critical deadlines.
Responsibilities- Support management of the agency's public website, intranet, and social media platforms, including content updates, maintenance, editing, and accessibility compliance.
- Assist in the development and delivery of communications materials, including presentations, speeches, talking points, videos, podcasts, and other multimedia content.
- Support the planning, production, ordering, and distribution of marketing and promotional materials such as brochures, posters, and branded items.
- Assist with the execution of media, marketing, and public engagement strategies, including focus group testing and development of recommendations.
- Provide high-level support to the communications team, ensuring smooth daily operations and adherence to agency policies and procedures.
- Prepare, compile, and track purchase orders, invoices, travel plans and documentation, reimbursements, and other fiscal or procurement-related materials in coordination with finance staff.
- Manage internal and external communications workflows, including office mail, email, phone inquiries, and tracking and routing requests for communications services.
- Coordinate meeting logistics, calendars, and follow-up activities, including scheduling, preparation of materials, note-taking, and tracking action items.
- Compile and produce reports and briefing materials, including executive news summaries, project tracking reports, and annual division activity documentation.
- Coordinate logistics for press events, conferences, and public outreach activities, including invitations, briefing materials, shipments, and agency representation at events such as the NYS Fair.
- Serve as a trusted communications resource, supporting staff across multiple initiatives, anticipating needs, and ensuring deadlines and deliverables are met.
- Travel: 10%
- Bachelor's degree in media, new media, English, communications, journalism, broadcasting, public relations, films, TV productions, or digital marketing AND two years of experience in public or governmental relations, and/or in writing or producing content for various media; OR
- Master's degree in media, new media, English, communications, journalism, broadcasting, public relations, films, TV productions, or digital marketing AND one year of experience in public or governmental relations, and/or in writing or producing content for various media; OR
- High School Diploma and six years of the experience described above.
- Three years of experience managing, updating, and improving public-facing websites using content management systems such as Drupal or SharePoint, with a focus on making them easier for the public to use.
- Two years of experience creating and managing web and social media content (articles, posts, graphics), and understanding major platforms such as Facebook, You Tube, X, Linked In, and Instagram.
- Candidates must possess a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State at the time of appointment and continuously thereafter.
- Strong writing and editing skills, with the ability to explain complex or sensitive information in plain, easy-to-understand language.
- Experience working with multiple teams, staying organized, and handling more than one task or project at a time.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and basic design tools such as Canva or Adobe Creative Suite.
- Knowledge of digital accessibility and how to keep websites compliant with Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) standards.
- Experience with NYS travel expenses and reporting system preferred.
