Position SummaryThe Project Accountant plays a critical role in supporting project financial performance by managing project budgets, billing, and financial reporting. This position works closely with Project Managers, Team Leaders, and leadership to ensure accurate financial tracking, timely invoicing, and compliance with contract requirements—particularly for public-sector clients.
Education & Experience- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field (or equivalent professional experience)
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in project accounting, preferably within an architecture, engineering, or professional services firm
- Experience with public-sector invoicing requirements (e.g., NYSDOT, NYSTA, OGS, DASNY)
- Experience maintaining project-based financial records and contract documentation
- Strong knowledge of accounting principles, project accounting, and financial reporting
- Proficiency in Deltek Vision or Deltek Vantagepoint is required
- Understanding of revenue recognition, project budgets, and cost tracking
- Excellent organizational, analytical, and communication skills
- High attention to detail with a commitment to accuracy
- Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with cross-functional teams
- Maintain accurate financial records for assigned projects, including contracts, amendments, budgets, and invoices
- Assist with project setup, budget development, and data entry within the accounting system
- Monitor project costs, labor, and expenses to support accurate revenue recognition
- Prepare, review, and issue client invoices in accordance with contract terms and agency requirements
- Generate client statements and manage accounts receivable
- Follow up on outstanding balances and conduct collection calls as needed
- Collaborate with Project Managers and Team Leaders to review project financial status, billing schedules, and budget variances
- Support audits, financial reviews, and compliance requirements related to public agency projects
