The Position

The purpose of this classification is to operate a transit system bus to safely transport passengers on an assigned route as directed.

Duties
  • Drives transit system bus to transport passengers along assigned route; observes traffic safety rules; maintains transit schedules.
  • Greets boarding passengers; collects fares and transfers; ensures passengers enter and exit bus safely; provides information/directions; maintains order on bus; assists elderly and passengers with disabilities as needed.
  • Performs pre-trip inspections; sweeps bus daily and empties trash cans; fuels bus as directed.
  • Prepares accident reports, vehicle maintenance reports, and incident reports; maintains accurate passenger count; submits to supervisor.
  • Responds as appropriate to emergency situations or vehicle breakdowns.
  • Consults with other operators regarding transfers.
  • Operates two-way radio to provide information or receive advice/direction.
Additional Functions

Performs other related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or GED required; additionally, two (2) years previous experience and/or training involving bus driving required; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia Commercial Driver's License (CDL) including appropriate endorsement(s).

    Requires the ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. May include counting, recording of counts and basic measuring.

  • Physical Ability:
    Tasks require the ability to exert very moderate physical effort in light work, typically involving some combination of stooping, kneeling, crouching and crawling, and which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of moderate weight (12-20 pounds).
  • Sensory Requirements:
    Some tasks may require the ability to perceive and discern colors or shades of colors, sounds, odors, depths, textures, and visual cues or signals. Some tasks may require the ability to communicate orally.
