Overview
The purpose of this classification is to perform skilled and semi-skilled, manual work functions associated with the installation, testing, painting and repair of gas meters, regulators and related equipment. This includes installation/removal, rebuilding/repair, testing, calibrating and painting of meters and regulators, detecting gas leaks, odorization testing, and related activities to maintain gas meter systems and regulator systems.
Responsibilities- Install, remove, rebuild/repair, test, calibrate and paint gas meters, regulators and related equipment.
- Install and program ERTS; perform odorization tests and related regulatory testing of meters and regulators.
- Maintain meter systems and regulator systems; service town border stations; monitor odorant levels in the system; maintain propane plants and program ERTS on meters.
- Test the accuracy of meters and related equipment to ensure compliance with established standards.
- Operate a variety of tools and equipment used in installation, repair and maintenance, including utility trucks, prover systems, odorators, drill presses, grinders, pipe threaders, air compressors, soldering equipment, post hole diggers, shovels, rakes, gauges and diagnostic instruments.
- Transport, load and unload equipment and materials used in projects.
- Conduct required annual tests including regulator tests, town border station tests and large firm meter testing.
- Perform general maintenance tasks to keep machinery, equipment, tools and facilities in operable condition; inspect equipment, check fluid levels, grease, wash and clean work areas; monitor operations for efficiency and safety; report faulty equipment.
- Maintain inventory of departmental equipment, tools, supplies and materials; conduct physical counts of materials.
- Read gas meters and ERTS; calculate and record gas consumption for customers and town border stations; transport readings.
- Maintain records of meter readings, gas pressure changes, temperature changes, load changes, work performed and related activities.
- Prepare or complete various forms, correspondence, odor reports, time sheets, charts and other documents.
- Receive and review forms, reports, charts, meter readings, maps, blueprints, manuals or other documentation; process, forward or retain as required.
- Operate a computer to enter, retrieve, review or modify data in a database; verify data accuracy and make corrections as needed.
- Communicate with supervisors, employees, city departments, customers and the public to coordinate work activities, review status and resolve problems.
- Provide information via telephone or two-way radio; take and relay messages and respond to service requests.
- High school diploma or GED; supplemented by vocational/technical training in Mechanics, Meter Repair, or related field; supplemented by three (3) years of previous experience and/or training involving mechanics or meter repair; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
- Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia Driver's License.
- Must pass DOT qualification test.

- Situational Reasoning: ability to evaluate information against measurable criteria with sound judgment and creativity.
- Physical Ability: tasks require moderate physical effort with frequent climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching and crawling; lifting up to 12-20 pounds with potential heavier objects up to 100 pounds.
- Sensory Requirements: ability to perceive colors, sounds, odors, depths, textures and signals; ability to communicate orally.
- Environmental Factors: exposure to adverse conditions such as dirt, dust, odors, rain, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, machinery, electric currents, traffic hazards, and potentially toxic agents.
