Location: Bornite

The Environmental Coordinator will ensure that the project complies with all state and federal regulatory requirements, corporate environmental policies, best management practices and permitting requirements. This is a full-time salaried position.

Key Responsibilities Safety
  • Implement, model, and enforce Site Safety and Environmental Policies
  • Lead and participate in risk assessments
  • Fulfill assigned Incident Management or Emergency Response Team roles per the Ambler Crisis and Emergency Management Plan
  • Ensure personnel receive task‑appropriate training with documentation
  • Develop Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs) and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) with Environmental staff and contractors
  • Identify, report, and address safety hazards; promote a culture of safe work practices
  • Encourage reporting of hazards, near misses, and incidents
  • Conduct daily toolbox meetings with Environmental staff and contractors
  • Participate in weekly camp‑wide safety meetings
  • Assist with safety audits of environmental operations
  • Conduct and/or participate in incident investigations
Environmental Department Coordination
  • Assist in routine environmental compliance activities including developing SOP's and environmental forms
  • Collect and prepare samples for testing as part of baseline and remediation data collection programs
  • Create and deliver training presentations to onsite staff
  • Monitor drilling operations; report and respond to environmental issues
  • Design and install storm water control measures
  • Communicate site environmental policies and best practices to camp personnel and contractors
  • Direct spill prevention and clean‑up
  • Order department supplies and equipment, ensuring appropriate inventory is on hand for routine activities as well as critical response
  • Manage necessary paperwork, documentation and reporting in an organized framework
  • Manage/oversee the Environmental Database
  • Manage, evaluate and write reports for baseline data activities
  • Manage and coordinate with environmental contractors
  • Develop plans and programs for environmental field operations
  • Assist with permitting activities as needed, including reviewing and commenting on documents
  • Assist in communication with NANA liaisons and the Upper Kobuk communities about environmental programs
  • Leadership
  • Directly supervise two environmental technicians, including performance management
  • Assist with tracking, approving, and submitting employee time to payroll
  • Participate in daily management meetings
  • Model and maintain a culture of accountability and timely reporting of hazards or deficiencies
  • Model and uphold a respectful workplace culture; address any incidents of harassment
  • Provide recommendations to improve operations
Qualifications Education and Training
  • Bachelor of Science degree in a related field of study (environmental science/engineering, natural resource management, biology, ecology, hydrology, geology, etc.)
  • Current HAZWOPER certification preferred
  • Valid driver license required
Skills
  • Knowledge and understanding of ecological processes, hydrology, chemistry and mathematics
  • Ability to accurately interpret regulatory language
  • Abilities to both carry out the tasks of pre-determined programs and to make constructive suggestions regarding program adaptations and design
  • Knowledge of sampling and data collection, analysis and reporting procedures
  • Knowledge of spill prevention and response procedures
  • Skill in the use of computer programs including Microsoft Office suite
  • Skill in troubleshooting and field repair of environmental equipment
  • Knowledge of and ability to carry out safe remote operational procedures
  • Ability to work tactfully with camp staff, contractors and visitors
  • Ability to work independently and manage time in an effective manner
  • Ability to be flexible and adaptable to change
  • Ability to take initiative in the case of an emergency
  • Ability to follow and provide instructions effectively and in a timely manner
  • Ability to work for long periods of time, perhaps 2-3 weeks at a time, in a remote location
  • Excellent professional verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to effectively deal with several tasks simultaneously
