Job Summary

The Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Commercial Fisheries is recruiting a Fishery Biologist 2 to assist in the management of herring and salmon commercial and subsistence fisheries. The role involves overseeing the operation of three tower camps, aiding in aerial surveys, and making and communicating management decisions for the Nushagak and Togiak Districts.

Working Conditions

Job located in Dillingham, a small town (population 2,400). The area offers access to Wood Tikchik State Park and private land for recreation (hiking, camping, hunting, berry gathering) with a land use permit.

Requirements:
Valid Alaska Driver's license; use and possession of firearms and ammunition; extensive travel in small aircraft; operation of outboard skiffs. First Aid/CPR certification will be obtained after employment.

Core Responsibilities
  • Assist in managing commercial herring and salmon fisheries.
  • Oversee the operation of three tower camps.
  • Aide with aerial surveys for herring or salmon.
  • Make and communicate management decisions for the Nushagak and Togiak Districts.
Who We Are Looking For
  • Knowledge of sustainable fisheries management.
  • Experience or eagerness to learn remote Alaskan field project logistics, budget management, supervision, and reporting.
  • Patience and communication skills with stakeholders.
  • Familiarity with the Alaska Board of Fisheries processes.
  • Experience or eagerness with aerial surveys for salmon or herring.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in biology, limnology, biometrics, oceanography, forestry, fisheries science, or related natural resource management field, or equivalent credit‑hour combination.
  • One year of professional experience as a biologist or fish culturing role (e.g., Fishery Biologist
    1).
  • Substitutions:
    College credit prerequisites (≥24 semester hours in required sciences with ≥16 upper division credits; ≥12 semester hours in supporting disciplines such as chemistry, physics, mathematics, statistics, geology, hydrology, or GIS).
  • Master’s degree in the required field substitutes for the professional experience requirement.
