Position: WILDLAND FIRE/RESOURCE TECHNICIAN 2 - INITIAL ATTACK/HELI TACK (PCN 10-N24033 + 5)
Location: McGrath

The Department of Natural Resources, Division of Forestry & Fire Protection is recruiting for multiple Wildland Fire and Resource Technician 2s in McGrath. This position is open to Alaska residents only. Please check our residency definition to determine if you qualify.

What You Will Be Doing

This position will serve as a crew member on a wildland firefighting crew assigned to an exclusive-use helicopter. Selected candidates will also be assigned to fuels reduction activities, which include removing timber, clearing brush, piling vegetation, burning vegetation piles, maintaining project-related equipment, and documenting daily activities. The position will also be expected to respond to initial-attack and extended-attack wildfire incidents as a Wildland Firefighter.

The Division of Forestry & Fire Protection, Southwest Area provides Wildland Fire Suppression and Support activities for 88 million acres in Southwest Alaska and continues to implement a widespread Fuels Reduction Program to protect communities and values at risk from wildfires.

The Working Environment You Can Expect

The duty station is McGrath, Alaska—a remote community on the upper Kuskokwim River accessible only by aircraft and boat with a population of about 250 residents and limited services. “Dry” housing on the compound is offered to selected candidates with communal bathroom, laundry, and dining facilities.

Qualifications
  • Six months of trainee or entry-level wildland firefighting or forestry field experience (or equivalent service as a Wildland Fire and Resource Technician
    1). Coursework from an accredited college or vocational technical school may substitute for required field experience per the detailed equivalency chart.
  • Red Card qualification under the National Incident Qualification System.
  • Must pass the Work Capacity Test at the "Arduous" level.
  • Alaska driver's license or eligibility to obtain one before reporting to duty.
  • Ability to travel both in- and out-of-state for fire suppression assignments; stand‑by or recall status during the fire season; availability for 14–21 day absences; flying in small fixed‑wing aircraft or helicopters; handling hazardous materials.
  • May require a commercial driver's license with endorsements.
  • Must be at least eighteen years of age.
