Position: LICENSED CHIEF ENGINEER
Location: Dutch Harbor

The Chief Engineer directs and oversees the activities of the engine room regarding the mechanical operations, repair and maintenance functions for the vessel by performing the following duties personally:

Essential Functions:
  • Directs and oversees the functionality and safety of the vessel's engines, boilers, deck machinery, electrical, hydraulic, refrigeration and sanitary systems in accordance with Trident policy and local, state and federal laws and regulations.
  • Oversees and establishes the performance and operation standards for all vessel systems. Resolves problems using solutions that involve appropriate techniques, technologies, or concepts.
  • Must be able to give specific directions in the case of an emergency. Can include launching a raft, donning an immersion suit or life preserver, assist in a response to fire or flooding.
  • Directs and oversees required documentation for energy management, conservation and preventive maintenance programs.
  • Confers with Captain and management to determine engineering feasibility and cost effectiveness of present or future projects.
  • Oversees the implementation of training to ensure that all vessel engineering staff are properly trained, qualified and in compliance with regulatory training and/or regulatory certification requirements.
  • Advises management of new developments which may affect profit, schedule, costs, and/or inter-departmental relations.
  • Maintains a working knowledge of safety policies and regulations to ensure duties of self and others are performed in a safe manner.
  • Minimum Requirements

    Must hold a valid USCG Chief Engineer License with minimum 3000HP plus STCW endorsement (RFPEW; OICEW).

    Preferred Experience
  • Three years as licensed Chief Engineer of a processing vessel in the fishery being applied for.
  • Three years as an Assistant Engineer on a similar sized vessel.
  • Advanced fire fighting skills.
  • Current First Aid and CPR cards.
  • Clean vessel safety record.
  • Familiarity with all state and federal requirements/regulations for the fishery being applied for.
  • Familiarity with pollution abatement procedures.
  • Basic HR awareness and training.
  • Familiarity with production needs and willingness to work with vessel manager to support production.
  • Familiarity with state and federal regulations that apply to the vessel being applied for.
  • Able to manage vessel safety programs and take responsibility for keeping the vessel shipshape.
  • Subject to random selection drug screens as required by USCG.

    Work environment (includes travel/on-call)

    While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and moving mechanical parts. The employee is frequently exposed to outside weather conditions. The employee is occasionally exposed to high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; extreme cold; risk of electrical shock and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.

    Physical

    demands

    While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to sit; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl and talk or hear. The employee must be able to climb or descend one or more set of steep stairs or vertical ladders both inside and outside in all weather conditions.

    The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include distance vision and depth perception.

    Must be capable of boarding and departing (exiting) a vessel without assistance by moving up or climbing a gangplank, the stern ramp of a vessel and/or a vertical ladder both inside and outside in all weather conditions. Must be capable of boarding/departing the vessel by being lifted in a crane or manlift. May also enter and exit a skiff from a dock, plane, or a boat unassisted.

    Must meet at designated locations to receive instructions and place on a life jacket and an immersion suit without assistance in one minute or less. Must also move quickly without assistance to any designated lifeboat station.
