Overview

The Aldo Leopold Nature Center (ALNC) is seeking adaptable, creative, and engaging educators to teach our summer camp programs from June through August. ALNC is a non-profit educational organization guided by Aldo Leopold's land ethic, with a mission to nurture children, their well-being, and environmental sustainability through connecting and learning in nature. ALNC serves children, teachers, and families through year-round programming that includes field trips, camps, a nature preschool, and public and private events.

Schedule: TIME COMMITMENT: JUNE 8 - AUGUST 21, 2026

This full-time seasonal position includes one week of staff training (June 8-12) and ten weeks of summer camp (June 15-August 21).

Camps run from 8:30am-3:30pm on weekdays followed by after care until 5:30pm. Educators typically work 8:00am-4:00pm but may be scheduled from 9:45am-5:45pm on select weeks throughout the summer with advanced notice. Opportunities for planning and prep will be built into the weekly schedule.

Salary/Wage Range: Hourly $20.00 to $21.50

Position Summary /

Job Duties

The primary responsibility of this position is the planning and delivery of experiential nature programs for 4-13 year old campers. Environmental educators are responsible for the physical and emotional well-being of the children in their care and are expected to facilitate a welcoming environment that is safe, inclusive, and fun for all participants. Additional responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Independently supervise a small group of children during their camp session.
  • Design and lead hands-on activities that take into account camper ages, interests, and abilities.
  • Assess group dynamics and apply appropriate behavior management techniques.
  • Collaborate with other staff to create a cohesive camp community.
  • Maintain a reliable attendance record throughout the summer.

Ideal candidates will be able to manage a full-time weekly schedule, work well in a team environment, communicate effectively with others, and represent ALNC in a professional manner. Flexibility, initiative, the ability to problem solve, and a sense of humor are a must.

Qualifications
  • At least 18 years of age and have completed high school or its equivalent.
  • Certified in First Aid/CPR (training will be provided for those who need it).
  • Must pass a child care background check and fingerprint screen.
  • Experience working with and supporting youth socially, emotionally, and behaviorally, preferably in small group settings.
  • Interest in developing and leading a variety of enriching camp activities.
  • Ability to develop rapport with campers of all ages and backgrounds.
  • Comfortable making quick decisions in response to changing circumstances.
  • Ability to maintain sight and sound supervision of campers at all times.
  • Willingness to work outside in all summer weather conditions.
  • Preferred: clean driving record and willingness to drive a 15 passenger van.
