Manufacturing Engineer, Mechanical Engineer
Science is a clinical stage, vertically integrated technology company focused on solving some of neuroscience’s hardest questions and most serious unmet medical needs. We work to restore quality of life to those with debilitating conditions for which there are no treatment options, creating devices aimed at restoring vision, cognition, and mobility to patients who have lost it. To support progress across our industry, we provide state-of-the-art components and vertically integrated infrastructure for others to build on via Science Foundry.
We are looking for a hands-on Mechanical Engineer to design, fabricate, and iterate on assembly fixtures, tooling, and custom equipment that support the build and manufacturing of our neural interface devices. You will work closely with our microfabrication, optics, biology, and electronics teams to turn complex assembly challenges into reliable, repeatable hardware solutions. The ideal candidate is a detail-oriented self-starter who thinks outside the box, is comfortable with open-ended problems, and is able to pivot quickly.
Work at Science is highly collaborative, cross-functional, and encompasses the range from micro (we work in microns) to macro (some machines weigh thousands of pounds). As a young company, our needs are always changing, and so individual roles continuously evolve.
Role responsibilities:
- Design precision alignment fixtures, assembly jigs, and clamping tools for micro-scale device builds, ensuring positional accuracy at the micron level
- Rapidly prototype and fabricate tooling using in-house CNC, 3D printing, laser cutting, and manual machining capabilities
- Collaborate with process engineers to understand assembly workflows, identify tooling needs, and develop fixturing strategies that improve yield and throughput
- Create and maintain detailed mechanical drawings, tolerancing documentation, and assembly instructions in Solid Works or equivalent CAD
- BS or MS in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline
- 3+ years of experience designing fixtures, tooling, or custom equipment for precision assembly or manufacturing
- Proficiency in 3D CAD (Solid Works preferred) with strong command of GD&T and mechanical drawing standards
- Hands-on fabrication skills: comfortable operating CNC mills, lathes, 3D printers, and hand tools
- Ability to move quickly from concept sketch to functional prototype with minimal oversight
Preferred qualifications:
- Experience designing tooling for micro-assembly, semiconductor packaging, or medical device manufacturing
- Familiarity with microfabrication techniques, cleanroom-compatible materials, and contamination control requirements
- Experience with design for manufacturability (DFM) in low-to-mid volume production environments
- Mechanical simulation and calculation experience (FEA, tolerance stack-up analysis)
- Familiarity with fluidics and/or microfluidics, including simulation
- Experience with design controls and risk management tools in a regulated environment
- Experienced with early-stage startups and/or the medical device industry;
Class III device experience is a plus
