Job Description & How to Apply Below
We are seeking a Microfabrication Engineer specializing in device assembly and integration at our Alameda, CA location. Your main focus will be the assembly and packaging of micro-scale components, including flip-chip bonding, LED die integration, and advanced interconnect processes for implantable neural devices. This is a hands-on position where you will develop and optimize assembly workflows, build functional device prototypes, and drive processes from development through production.
Work at Science is highly collaborative, cross-functional, and encompasses the range from micro (we work in microns) to macro (some machines weigh thousands of pounds). As a young company, our needs are always changing, and so individual roles continuously evolve.
Role responsibilities:
* Develop and optimize flip-chip bonding processes for integrating bare die (LEDs, ASICs) onto custom substrates and flexible circuits
* Assemble micro-scale optical and electronic components into implantable device form factors
* Characterize bond quality and device performance using shear testing, electrical probing, optical inspection, and environmental stress screening
* Collaborate with design, process, and test engineers to define assembly specifications, acceptance criteria, and process control plans
* Help bring up, qualify, and maintain assembly equipment including die bonders, flip-chip bonders, wire bonders, and dispensing systems
Key qualifications:
* 3+ years of hands-on experience with micro-assembly, flip-chip bonding, or advanced packaging processes
* Working knowledge of solder reflow, thermocompression bonding, adhesive bonding, or similar die-attach techniques
* Experience with precision placement equipment and associated metrology (bond alignment accuracy, coplanarity, etc.)
* Familiarity with cleanroom or controlled-environment manufacturing protocols
* Comfortable working in a fast-paced, iterative R&D environment
Preferred qualifications:
* Experience integrating LED or optoelectronic die into system-in-package or multi-chip module assemblies
* Familiarity with underfill, encapsulation, and hermetic sealing techniques for implantable or high-reliability devices
* Background in MEMS packaging, wafer-level packaging, or semiconductor back-end processes
* Experience with wire bonding (ball and wedge) and ribbon bonding
* Knowledge of biocompatible materials and processes for medical devices;
Class III device experience is a plus
* Experienced with early-stage startups and/or the medical device industry
Salary/Pay Range:
Science is required under California law to include a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. We determine your level based on your interview performance and make an offer based on the indicated salary band. The base salary range for this full-time position is $115,000 - $170,000 annually + equity + benefits. Within the range, individual pay is determined by several factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.
