Baptist Health Shelby Hospital’s Adult Psychiatric Unit is a 20-bed, secure inpatient unit dedicated to adults experiencing acute psychiatric crises. Patients receive comprehensive care for mental health conditions per DSM-5, with evaluations by psychiatrists and psychiatric nurse practitioners. The multidisciplinary team includes psychiatrists, nurses, social workers, case managers, and recreational therapists, ensuring holistic treatment.

A medical hospitalist is available as needed. The unit prioritizes patient safety, confidentiality, and supportive care to promote recovery.

Essential Functions
- Assess patient needs and develop/revise individualized care plans, evaluating progress toward outcomes.

- Provide age-appropriate care, serving as preceptor, charge nurse, educator, or clinician.
- Collaborate with medical staff and interdisciplinary teams for effective planning.

- Coordinate care and delegate tasks appropriately.
- Document care accurately, including assessments, education, medication administration, and safety measures.

- Prioritize patient care based on Evidence-Based Practice Standards.
- Identify and resolve problems effectively.
- Delegate tasks considering patient needs and team capabilities.
- Communicate patient conditions and unit concerns clearly.
- Provide compassionate, therapeutic care environment.
- Be aware of legal issues and patient rights.
- Support new staff and students through collaboration with education and leadership teams.
- Maintain regular attendance and compliance with policies and standards.

Hospital Care at Home Program
Patient Care Hub:
Administers patient care virtually, assessing needs via Tele Health, developing care plans, and evaluating outcomes. Capable of virtual visits and escalating patient decompensation.
In-home Nursing:
Provides direct patient care in home settings, assessing needs, collaborating with teams, and traveling within assigned regions. Uses virtual technology for communication and care delivery, and transports items as needed.
Education/Training:
Graduate of an approved nursing program. Meets all competency requirements.
Licensure/Certification:
Current Alabama RN license or valid eNLC multistate license. BLS certification; ACLS, NRP, PALS, TNCC required for specific areas. Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation required for in-home nursing.
Experience:
Minimum 1-year nursing experience unless approved by leadership. For Hospital Care at Home, 2 years of acute care nursing experience required.
