Overview
The purpose of this classification is to perform firefighting and rescue operations in public safety and emergency situations, such as fires, hazardous materials spills, vehicle accidents, and related incidents.
This posting will remain open on a continuous basis. Applications will be reviewed, and qualified candidates will be contacted as vacancies become available.
A candidate who meets the minimum qualifications will hold a High School Diploma or equivalent, be at least 20 years old and insurable by the City’s insurance carrier, complete a pre-employment drug screen and physical, and complete all steps in the multi-step screening process.
Preferred candidates will hold Alabama Fire Fighter I/II and EMT Basic certifications. Additional compensation will be offered for candidates who hold an Alabama Paramedic license and may be based on years of firefighting experience.
Firefighter: $18.91/hr - $24.43/hr
• Fire Medic: $21.02/hr - $27.18/hr
• Based on 2808 hours worked per year.
- Responds to alarms and all fire and non-fire emergencies (structural fires, hazardous material spills, vehicle accidents, and various rescue operations) and emergency medical service calls. Provides basic life support services using standard operating procedures and EMS equipment during calls for service or special event operations.
- Performs firefighting and rescue tasks, extinguishes fires, extricates vehicles, performs rope and crowd rescues, ascends/positions ladders, conducts forcible entry, and operates fire stream nozzles.
- Performs salvage and overhaul, assists with evacuation and crowd control, secures utilities, and conducts traffic control at accident scenes.
- Assists with flow testing of fire hydrants and records data.
- Provides mutual aid to other fire departments; assists police and medical units as needed.
- Drives, operates, and maintains fire pumpers and aerial apparatus; operates and maintains self-contained breathing apparatus.
- Operates a variety of equipment (fire rescue equipment, department vehicles, radio communications, extinguishers, hoses/nozzles, ladders, power tools, hand tools, and related equipment).
- Performs pre-fire planning and evaluation; maintains familiarity with city maps; cleans and maintains equipment before and after fires to ensure readiness.
- Performs child safety seat inspections and installations.
- Participates in public safety education activities and conducts health screenings (e.g., blood pressure).
- Assists in fire prevention activities; delivers lectures/programs to civic groups, schools, and businesses; conducts fire safety inspections of businesses.
- Assists with developing and conducting fire department training exercises.
- Performs routine maintenance of fire department property, vehicles, and equipment; records and reports maintenance activities.
- Attends training classes, maintains required training hours, and maintains physical fitness.
- Collects and records information for fire reports; prepares reports/logs; issues burn permits as appropriate.
- Operates a personal computer and office equipment as needed to complete essential functions.
- Creates/maintains positive public relations; provides information and education on fire safety; conducts station tours and blood pressure checks; installs smoke detectors; participates in parades and civic events.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of basic arithmetic operations.

High school diploma or equivalent; supplemented by vocational/technical training in firefighting, hazardous materials, and basic emergency medical care.
