Overview

We are seeking a skilled Electrical Reliability Technician to join our Melt Shop Maintenance team in Calvert, North Mobile County, AL.

Objective
:
The Melt Shop Electrical Reliability Technician is a day-shift hourly role responsible for ensuring the Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) shell and associated systems remain ready for safe and reliable operation. This technician provides technical support to melt shop production, executes electrical maintenance tasks, and leads small-to-medium improvement projects. The role also provides shift coverage support during vacations, absences, and business needs.

Requirements

and experience
  • Journeyman-level electrician or equivalent industrial electrical certification.
  • 3+ years industrial electrical experience (steel industry preferred).
  • Strong troubleshooting skills with motors, drives, control circuits, and instrumentation.
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical drawings, single-lines, PLC I/O maps, and schematics.
  • Familiarity with Siemens PCS7, S7-300/400, or similar control systems (preferred).
  • Ability to work safely in high-energy, high-temperature melt shop environments.
Preferred Skills
  • Experience with Electric Arc Furnace electrical systems, ladle metallurgy, caster, or melt shop operations.
  • Thermal imaging, IR camera use, or condition-based monitoring experience.
  • Basic understanding of mechanical systems associated with the Electric Arc Furnace shell.
  • Project management and planning skills.
  • Ability to coordinate with cross-functional teams (production, mechanical, engineering).
Job Responsibilities
  • EAF Shell & Reliability Duties
    • Maintain the EAF shell and its electrical systems in a state of continuous readiness for operation.
    • Perform routine reliability inspections, preventive maintenance, and corrective repairs on shell components including thermocouples, electrode regulation interfaces, shell grounding, cooling systems monitoring, and thermal vision systems.
    • Use IR camera systems, thermal imaging, PLC data, and historian tools to identify early indicators of shell degradation or failure risk.
    • Ensure all safety interlocks, sensors, and protection devices associated with the EAF shell are functional and calibrated.
    • Lead troubleshooting efforts during EAF downtime events.
  • Electrical Maintenance & Support
    • Provide day-shift electrical support for the melt shop and respond to requests from production or maintenance leadership.
    • Assist shift electricians by covering vacations or filling in during high-demand periods.
    • Perform troubleshooting and repairs on MCCs, transformers, drives, motors, sensors, PLC I/O, and power distribution equipment.
    • Execute lockout/tagout procedure compliance and ensure safe work practices at all times.
    • Support the maintenance team with technical expertise in diagnostics and root-cause analysis.
  • Project Ownership & Improvements
    • Own and execute assigned electrical improvement projects, including:
    • Equipment modernization or control system upgrades
    • Cable replacement, sensor upgrades, and reliability-driven redesigns
    • Coordinate with engineering, vendors, and contractors during project work.
    • Document project plans, progress, and results.
  • Documentation & Communication
    • Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, inspection logs, and work orders using SAP.
    • Provide clear communication to leadership and shift teams on equipment status and repairs.
    • Assist in updating electrical procedures, PMs, and technical documentation.
    • Participate in shift hand-off communication when providing coverage.
Work schedule & expectations
  • Day shift role with standard daytime hours.
  • Must be available to provide shift coverage during scheduled vacations or business needs.
  • Occasional overtime, nights, or weekend work required depending on melt shop conditions.
  • Expected to be highly self-directed and prioritize reliability tasks with minimal supervision.

Salary: N6 USD.
