Field Construction Specialist / Construction Discipline Lead / Engineer – Alabama (Multiple Positions)

Technical Shared Services (TSS) – Construction Projects West

PLEASE NOTE:

This posting serves up to 3 full‑time opportunities within our Construction Projects West group. We are recruiting experienced individuals for project & construction site roles supporting various projects in Alabama. Specifically, these sites include:

  • Plant Gorgas (Parrish, AL)
  • Plant Gaston (Wilsonville, AL)
  • Plant Miller (West Jefferson, AL)

Relocation/per diem assistance may be available if the successful candidate does not already live within a reasonable commute distance.

Job Summary

This position serves to provide oversight and management of major capital projects for the Projects group, within our Technical & Shared Services (TSS) organization. This position is responsible for project safety, quality, cost, and schedule requirements. Responsibilities include working closely with various TSS departments as well as external groups. This role requires the ability to review and if needed, develop work products such as: project scope documents, cost estimates, P6 schedules, safety plans, quality plans, and staffing plans.

Job Responsibilities
  • This position requires strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work with a variety of internal and external stakeholders in order to solve issues and keep the project moving forward (i.e. engineering, operations, craft labor, contractors, outside agencies).
  • Perform Contract Management.
  • Abide by all safety rules and help establish and maintain a culture focused on safety.
  • Help establish and maintain a culture of inclusiveness and teamwork.
  • Inspection of construction and sitework installations for compliance to drawings and specifications.
  • Utilize computer business tools to monitor and manage schedule and cost reporting.
  • The ability to work across various technologies and systems to achieve the client’s goals.
  • Candidate must be able to adapt to changing work duties, be able to work with limited supervision, and must be able to perform successfully in an individual and team environment.
  • The successful candidate must be available for call outs, holidays and weekends and may require some extended work hours.
  • Must be able to work in extreme climates and environments (e.g., cold, hot, dusty, humid).

Job Qualifications
  • Education (preferred):
    • Associates (2-year) or Bachelors (4-year) degree preferred, but not required.
    • Preferred disciplines include Building Science, Construction Management, Engineering, or another related field.
    • Project Management Professional or similar accreditation/professional license beneficial.
  • Experience (required):
    • Field oversight of active construction projects and processes.
  • Experience (preferred):
    • Power generation experience.
    • Industrial experience.
  • Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities:
    • Knowledge of OSHA and applicable environmental regulations.
    • Knowledge of construction standard practices, techniques, quality requirements, applicable codes and standards.
    • Knowledge of various equipment and technologies applicable to power generation facilities.
    • Proven risk assessment skills and sound judgment/decision making.
    • Strong organizational, administrative, time management, project management, facilitation and analytical skills are required.
    • Knowledge and experience with personal computers and the ability to learn numerous software applications quickly.
    • Self-motivation and demonstrated initiative is crucial for this position.
    • Ability to interface with vendors and contractors while representing the best interests of Southern Company.
    • Ability to lead diverse teams toward a common goal.
    • Ability to build strong working relationships with a wide range of Southern Company Generation organizations.
