The Controls Engineer is a resource for the Uncrustables plant, providing key technical leadership with regard to power and control systems, equipment specification and maintenance, proper operation, technician development, troubleshooting and repair to achieve or exceed reliability targets within a specific department (Bakery or Sandwich Making). Throughout ongoing operations, this role has responsibility for systems optimization, compliance, personnel safety and technician skill development relative to plant electrical power and process control systems.
Location:
McCalla, AL. Relocation assistance will be offered for this role. 100% onsite.
- Work with the site Controls Engineering Manager to develop power and control standards and ensure application of the standards in their area of responsibility.
- Be responsible for validation of the MES data from PLC into Proficy; support plant PEs in conditioning PLC data to accommodate effective data analysis, including application development.
- Own the validity and ongoing system for maintaining the site sustainability metering equipment (power monitors and usage flow meters); own and use power monitoring data to develop plans to reduce overall consumption and costs.
- Provide expertise in the design and implementation of machine control and process automation applications, such as control strategies, HMI design, MES applications and KPI development.
- Work with the site Controls Engineering Manager, department management and technicians to identify failure causes, and develop countermeasure plans and strategies to eliminate them in the areas of safety, quality, reliability and cost.
- Own parts or whole Key Elements for systems related to power and control such as electrical safety (LOTO, Electrical PPE, Energized work permits, low voltage qualification, etc.) and Quality/CCP compliance (checkweighers, metal detectors, vision systems, ingredient flows, temperatures, etc.).
- Work closely with engineering and operations leaders on selection and installation/start-up of new equipment.
- Serve as project manager for initiatives ranging from E&I focused projects.
- Provide power and controls engineering support on capital initiatives when needed.
- Provide support throughout other parts of the plant as needed.
- Know, communicate and ensure technician compliance to local and national regulator codes (NFPA 70, NFPA 70e, NFPA 79 and OSHA 1910); also responsible for ensuring equipment and safe practice compliance in the area of responsibility.
- Understand technical systems and terminology.
- Learn and integrate new technologies.
- Use plant systems software (Proficy, Project Management, eAM, etc.).
- Be self‑motivated and able to motivate others.
- Have strong organizational, critical thinking, and problem‑solving skills.
- Have effective presentation, verbal, and written communication skills.
- Be proficient in Microsoft Suite applications.
- Some travel will be required as needed.
- Be willing to work off‑shifts or weekends.
- A Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering.
- At least 5 years of relevant controls experience.
- At least 2 years of experience technically leading and developing others such as maintenance technicians or fellow engineers.
- At least 5 years of manufacturing experience.
- Coaches E&I technicians within the department; helps controls engineering leadership build a sustainable system for plant E&I skill development.
- Serves as subject matter expert for plant power and control systems and is a key member of plant technical leadership.
- Technical depth and breadth on Rockwell hardware/software, power distribution, and instrumentation.
- Capable of leading root cause analysis efforts around controls‑related failures.
- Controls or Electrical experience in food or other GMP manufacturing is preferred.
- Ability to effectively engage, lead, and build capability on the floor.
- Ability to work and manage within a team environment.
- Strong knowledge of machine and/or process control hardware, instrumentation and software including Allen Bradley PLC and Rockwell Factory Talk platforms.
