The WLJS-FM news & talk director helps the program director plan, manage, and supervise the content and broadcasting of WLJS-FM, JSU’s student‑run radio station, across all its platforms, which may include terrestrial broadcasting, digital streaming audio, podcasts, the web, social media, and other forms of media. The director is responsible for developing informational and entertainment programming that relies on speech and conversation to ensure WLJS provides programs that are of value to JSU students and the broader university community.

As a member of the WLJS student staff, the director works closely with the other student staff members and with the director of student media. The director must become familiar with the Society of Professional Journalists’ Code of Ethics and use the code as a guide. The director also must become familiar with FCC requirements pertaining to WLJS’s broadcast license and help ensure compliance with those requirements from the student staff.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Assist the program director plan, manage, and supervise the content and broadcasting of WLJS-FM.
  • Maintain confidentiality of information.
  • Help recruit student staff and volunteer contributors for on‑air, online, and social media content.
  • Participate in regular staff meetings to plan WLJS’s programming.
  • Help arrange and participate in training for student staff, volunteers, and others involved in programming and digital content.
  • Meet regularly with the program director and the director of student media to discuss WLJS’s programming and broadcasting.
  • Represent WLJS at public events and professional meetings on campus and off campus.
  • Meet regularly with university administrators, students, faculty, athletic and community groups to discuss and assess the effectiveness of WLJS’s programming.
  • Monitor digital media analytics to gauge WLJS’s effectiveness in reaching its audience.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Applicants must be enrolled as a JSU student taking at least three (3) hours per fall or spring semester.
  • If not a first‑time student, the applicant must have a GPA of 3.00 or higher.
  • Selected applicants must provide evidence of student enrollment and GPA (unofficial transcript or printout of enrollment/GPA from My Jax State ).
  • Must maintain a professional attitude and appearance.
Preferred Qualifications
  • A major in communication with a concentration in broadcasting or digital media production.
  • Successful completion of COM 205 & 315 with a "C" or higher grade.
  • Prior experience with WLJS as a volunteer or in a media workshop course.
