Rationale

The of English Teacher is to take shared responsibility for the planning delivery and assessment of English language and literature across the curriculum ensuring that students are consistently challenged and supported to achieve their highest academic potential. The English Teacher plays a key role in promoting a love for critical thinking while fostering high standards of literacy articulacy and written communication.

They are expected to model and promote exceptional use of language set aspirational goals for students and implement engaging and effective teaching strategies that inspire and motivate learners. be a suitably qualified and passionate educator with a demonstrated ability to lead and deliver high‑quality English instruction that promotes deep learning and independent thought.

In addition to classroom teaching the role requires collaboration with colleagues to develop a coherent and enriching English curriculum as well as contributing to wider school life through student mentoring and extracurricular initiatives such as debating clubs, writing competitions or drama productions. The successful candidate will be empathetic, proactive and possess a strong classroom presence with the ability to positively influence both student outcomes and the broader learning environment.

  • Set high expectations which inspire, motivate and challenge students.
  • Establish a safe and stimulating environment for students rooted in mutual respect.
  • Set goals that stretch and challenge students of all backgrounds, abilities and dispositions.
  • Demonstrate consistently the positive attitudes, values and behaviour which are expected of students.
Promoting Progress and Outcomes
  • Be accountable for students attainment, progress and outcomes.
  • Be aware of students' capabilities and their prior knowledge and plan teaching to build on these.
  • Guide students in setting academic goals related to English proficiency including reading stamina, grammar accuracy and interpretive depth. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of how students learn and how this impacts on teaching.
  • Encourage students to take a responsible and conscientious attitude to their own work and study.
  • Encourage students to develop a personal voice in their writing and confidence in public speaking.
  • Recognise and respond to the diverse language backgrounds of students supporting EAL learners through structured language development strategies.

  • Have a secure knowledge of English language and literature including grammar, vocabulary development, composition and literary analysis.
  • Foster and maintain students' interest in reading, writing, speaking and listening by using a variety of engaging texts and discussion‑based activities.
  • Demonstrate a critical understanding of current pedagogical approaches and developments in responsive texts, genre‑based writing and media literacy.
  • Promote the value of reading for pleasure and academic inquiry by introducing a diverse and inclusive range of literature.
  • Promote high standards of literacy, articulacy and accurate use of grammar and standard English in both spoken and written forms.
Plan and teach well‑structured lessons
  • Deliver lessons that develop students' skills in reading comprehension, literary analysis, creative and analytical writing and oral communication.
  • Select texts and materials that reflect both literary merit and relevance to students' lived experiences and cultural contexts.
  • Integrate explicit vocabulary instruction, grammar teaching and writing scaffolds into everyday practice.
  • Use guided reading, close‑reading strategies and writing workshops to support individual learning needs.
  • Promote a love of literature and storytelling to develop empathy, imagination and critical thinking.
