An employee in this class is responsible for the installation, maintenance, and repair of moderately complex and complex electrical equipment. Inspects and leads the electrical work of other skilled and semi-skilled employees.
Works under the administrative direction of the designated supervisor with considerable technical responsibility for work, work methods, and materials.
Installs, maintains, troubleshoots, and repairs various sizes and types of electric motors. Maintains and repairs generation and switching gear equipment, transformers, charging stations, hvac equipment, and distribution systems. Installs, maintains, and repairs various types of metering and recording devices. Installs, maintains, and repairs electrical/electronic controls, pumps, valves, solenoids, motors, vacuum cleaners, latches, buzzers, bells, timers and powered tools. Installs new conduit and wiring to old or new equipment for indoor or outdoor use.
Diagnoses faults in lighting circuits and panels; repairs or replaces lighting fixtures, lighting controls, and scoreboards. Lifts or moves large objects including light fixtures and large electrical cords. Performs work on electrical equipment that may require working from ladders, lifts, and scaffolding. Drives to various job sites to perform required work. Makes sketches, schematics and "as-built" drawings for existing, new, or proposed installations.
Keeps records of labor/materials used on various jobs. Provides technical advice on methods, modifications or installation of equipment to conserve energy, as well as for code compliance, and compatibility in city facility operations. Performs related work as required.
Graduation from an accredited high school or ged and a minimum of five years of commercial or industrial paid experience in the installation, maintenance, and repair of electrical equipment, wiring, and controls, including electronic controls. Possession of a valid state of ohio driver's license.
Considerable knowledge of the principles, practices, materials, and the methods of the repair, maintenance, and installation of electrical and electronic equipment, wiring, and controls. Considerable knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions in plant electrical work. Considerable knowledge of the principles of electronics and electrical control. Considerable knowledge of the current national electric code.
Skill in performing mathematical calculations to determine fuse size, amp draw, wire size, voltage drop, etc.
Ability to use and care for tools of the electrical trade. Ability to perform a variety of maintenance, repair, and installation duties on complex electrical equipment. Ability to read and prepare sketches, schematics, diagrams, and "as-built" drawings. Ability to detect, locate, and correct electrical troubles and faults in wiring, wiring devices, controls, control circuits and allied equipment. Ability to work on or near energized building electrical equipment up to 480 volts.
Ability to recognize and distinguish colors of wire, resistors, fuses, etc. Ability to see details at close range. Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions. Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions. Ability to climb ladders and work at various heights. Ability to lift up to 75 pounds. Ability to safely operate a motor vehicle. This is a classified position.
The selection process will consist of a competitive examination with credit for education and experience. A passing score must be obtained on the competitive examination in order to receive credit for education and experience. Test weights: competitive examination 70%, education 20%, experience 10%.
Candidates must meet the qualifications and requirements listed in the announcement at the time of examination and at the time of appointment.
Note:
the competitive examination may be suspended if shown to be impractical because of an insufficient number of qualified candidates. The candidates will then be ranked in a standard manner based on 70% for qualifying, 20% for education, and 10% for experience.
Since this examination is posted on a combined basis, two separate eligibility lists will be generated with promotional candidates considered before open candidates.
Residency: candidates who have been resident citizens within the corporate limits of the city of akron for at least one year immediately prior to the examination and who continue to reside within the corporate limits of the city of akron throughout the remainder of the selection process will have 5 points added to their passing grades.
