Job Overview

This is skilled work in the fire maintenance facility. An employee in this class is responsible for skilled servicing, maintenance and repair of a wide variety of automotive firefighting, emergency medical, and related equipment. Employee also performs general skilled maintenance and repair on division buildings, property and equipment.

Works under the supervision of the Fire Equipment Supervisor exercising considerable independent judgment in carrying out the duties and responsibilities of the job.

Repairs, overhauls, and maintains diesel and gasoline engines, transmissions, differentials, drive trains, brake systems, steering systems, air conditioning systems, electrical and electronic systems, pumps, pump transmissions, and other major components. Works on fire engines, ladder trucks, cars, foam trucks, and other firefighting and emergency medical service automotive equipment. Performs field service calls as needed. Maintains and repairs specialized lifesaving and rescue equipment such as resuscitators, medical suction units, and jaws-of-life.

When called, responds to two or more alarm fires to check pumpers and ladders, move equipment, supply oil and gas, make emergency repairs, bring additional equipment from storage, and generally provide maintenance support to the firefighting personnel. Fabricates parts and tools using welders, lathes, saws, drill presses, grinders, and related equipment. Performs general maintenance on division buildings such as maintaining overhead doors.

Rebuilds circulating pumps and replaces valves on low pressure boiler systems. Performs minor electrical repairs, rough carpentry, replacement and glazing of windows, and minor plumbing such as clearing clogged pipes and drains, replacing traps, repairing and/or replacing toilets, urinals, and faucets. Services equipment such as lawn mowers, weed trimmers, leaf blowers, snow blowers and station generators. Fabricates miscellaneous equipment such as shelving, bracing, brackets, and clamps from drawings or blueprints.

Repairs and maintains support equipment such as extension cords, smoke ejectors, and hand powered tools. Performs routine maintenance on auxiliary generators such as changing oil and replacing points. Maintains and repairs air tanks and self-contained breathing equipment. Performs related work as required.

Qualifications and Requirements Fire Equipment Mechanic
  • Graduation from an accredited high school or GED and a minimum of three years of skilled paid experience in automotive and/or construction equipment repair, or an equivalent combination of paid experience and training. The equivalency statement means that you may substitute up to 50% of paid experience with related training.
  • Possession of a valid State of Ohio driver's license.
  • Possession of or must obtain within 120 days of employment, a valid State of Ohio commercial driver's license Class B with airbrake endorsement.
Master Fire Equipment Mechanic
  • Graduation from an accredited high school or GED and a minimum of three years of skilled paid experience in automotive and/or construction equipment repair, or an equivalent combination of paid experience and training. The equivalency statement means that you may substitute up to 50% of paid experience with related training.
  • Possession of a valid State of Ohio driver's license.
  • Possession of or must obtain within 120 days of employment, a valid State of Ohio commercial driver's license Class B with airbrake endorsement.
  • Possession of current ASE certification for Master Automobile Technician and Master Heavy-Duty Truck Technician.

Considerable knowledge of the methods, tools, and practices associated with the servicing, maintenance and repair of automotive, construction, and related equipment. Considerable knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of firefighting equipment repair work. Basic knowledge of welding, fabricating, and automotive body work.

Skill in diagnosing and repairing automotive, construction, and related equipment. Skill in the use of computers with standard and customized software. Ability to read, comprehend, and apply new and relevant technical information.…
