Position Summary:

The Chief Technology Officer (CTO) provides executive leadership for all technology, information systems, and digital platforms supporting a physician-owned orthopedic hospital. The CTO is responsible for setting direction, establishing priorities, and advancing technology capabilities to strengthen clinical operations, physician efficiency, patient experience, regulatory compliance, and organizational performance. This role offers the opportunity to establish a clear technology roadmap, strengthen foundational capabilities, and thoughtfully advance digital enablement within a focused orthopedic hospital environment.

Responsibilities
  • Establish, execute, and continuously refine a multi-year information technology strategy aligned with organizational goals, physician governance, clinical priorities, and growth initiatives. Serve as a strategic advisor to executive leadership on technology direction, investment planning, risk management, and organizational readiness.
  • Quickly develop deep institutional knowledge of the organization s unique clinical, operational, and governance environment to inform decision-making. Maintain open, transparent, and ongoing communication with the Physician Director of IT to ensure alignment between clinical leadership and technology strategy.
  • Prepare and present technology strategy updates, risks, and progress reports to executive leadership and the Board, as appropriate. Provide executive oversight of clinical, operational, and administrative information systems with a focus on stability, usability, interoperability, and incremental improvement.
  • Develop a strong working understanding of outpatient and inpatient clinic flow, perioperative processes, and care delivery models to identify and enable meaningful clinical efficiency improvements. Partner closely with orthopedic surgeons, clinical leadership, and operations to align technology solutions with real-world workflows and patient care delivery. Guide the effective and cost-conscious use of digital tools across the full orthopedic episode of care, including pre-operative, surgical, post-acute, and ambulatory settings.
  • Maintain awareness of current and emerging medical hardware and software to ensure the organization remains technologically current and strategically positioned for future advancements. Lead information technology strategy and execution related to cybersecurity, data privacy, and regulatory compliance in accordance with healthcare regulations and industry best practices. Collaborate with quality, compliance, and risk management leaders to ensure technology supports patient safety, accreditation standards, and regulatory requirements.
  • Ensure secure, reliable, and scalable technology infrastructure that supports current operations while enabling future improvement. Oversee disaster recovery and business continuity planning to maintain patient safety and operational resilience.
  • Partner with finance and operations to evaluate the total cost of ownership, return on investment, and risk profile of technology investments.
  • Develop and manage operating and capital information technology budgets, balancing fiscal responsibility with strategic advancement. Actively pursue cost-effective software and hardware solutions that improve clinical efficiency and operational performance without compromising quality or security.
  • Lead vendor selection, contract negotiation, and ongoing vendor performance management with an emphasis on value, flexibility, and long-term partnership. Establish and mature data governance, reporting, and analytics capabilities that support clinical, operational, and financial decision making. Ensure data systems are reliable, actionable, and aligned with organizational priorities.
  • Recruit, develop, and lead a large, multidisciplinary information technology department capable of supporting current operations and future initiatives.
  • Allocate personnel and resources appropriately and in a fiscally responsible manner to meet organizational needs. Lead change management and system adoption efforts with particular attention to physician and staff experience. Promote collaboration across departments and ensure adherence to organizational policies, procedures, and standards.

Position Requirements
  • Education: Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree required. Preferably in Computer Science, Information Systems, or related business field. Masters degree preferred.
  • Experience: Minimum of 10 years of progressive experience in healthcare information technology, including leadership responsibility. Prior experience in a hospital, surgical facility, or orthopedic care environment required.
