responsibilities- provides daily system administration for databases residing on network servers to ensure that they are working and available for system users.
- confers with appropriate city personnel, users and vendors to identify and resolve problems.
- establishes backup schedules for new and existing database systems and schedules routine maintenance to minimize failure, down time and provide disaster prevention.
- installs and upgrades server application tools, creates database structures and objects and allocates system storage as needed.
- performs ongoing system monitoring and evaluation to assure compatibility and efficiency of database operations and compliance with database licenses.
- researches, evaluates and makes recommendations for use of upgrades, new software and/or related hardware.
- develops and implements security requirements for database applications.
- may provide analyst support for mainframe, business application or smaller stand‑alone systems by installing patches, making program changes, providing sql reports and working with users and vendors to correct problems.
- maintains professional competency and keeps current with technological advances and developments.
- uses on‑line connections to research and download technical information and software.
- performs related work as required.
- graduation from an accredited college or university with a baccalaureate degree in computer science or related field and a minimum of three years of paid experience in complex database design, installation and maintenance, network, or business application support.
- the college requirement may be substituted on a year‑for‑year basis with related training and paid experience.
- specific program language or application support experience may be required based on current vacancy.
- possession of a valid state of ohio driver's license.
- considerable knowledge of network environments including server capabilities, application systems and software packages used in city operations.
- considerable knowledge of relational database concepts and the methods and practices used in database design and management.
- considerable knowledge of data processing system analysis and design.
- knowledge of debugging programs and databases.
- knowledge of user needs assessment procedures and techniques.
- skill in planning, organizing and directing the activities of a complex database program.
- skill in interacting with users to analyze their needs and to detect, define and resolve problems.
- ability to translate technical terminology into terms understandable to users.
- ability to supervise and train subordinate personnel.
- ability to apply security concepts while designing and maintaining database structures and data integrity.
- ability to identify and match the database requirements of the city against the capabilities of the available database management packages.
- ability to establish and maintain working relations with persons at all levels of the public and private sectors.

selection processthe selection process will consist of an assessment interview with credit for education and experience. A passing score must be obtained on the competitive examination in order to receive credit for education and experience.
test weights: competitive examination 70%, education 20%, experience 10%.
candidates must meet the qualifications and requirements listed in the announcement at the time of examination and at the time of appointment.
